NUTRITION

Review of Anatomy and Physiology

  1. Identify the major structures and functions of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small interesting, liver, gallbladder and pancreas
  2. Describe the processes of carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism
  3. Describe the functions and sources of nutrients and vitamins
  4. Define major concepts and terms used in the study of nutrition
  5. Summarize the major functions and sources of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates
  6. Summarize the major sources and functions of fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins
  7. Describe food labeling, food additives and storage of food

Assessment of Digestions and Nutritional Status

  1. Identify interview questions pertinent to assessment of the gastrointestinal tract, the accessory digestive organs, and nutritional status
  2. Describe physical assessment techniques used to evaluate digestion and nutritional status
  3. Identify manifestations of impairment in gastrointestinal function
  4. Describe variations in assessment findings for the older adult
  5. Identify the role of nutrition in assessment of the client’s eating behaviors
  6. Identify the energy producing nutrients and their full value
  7. Identify the major food sources of each mineral
  8. Define the food guide pyramid and discuss its value in meal planning

Nutritional, Oral and Esophageal Disorders

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of common nutritional, oral and esophageal

Review of Anatomy and Physiology: Bowel Elimination

  1. Identify the major structure and functions of the small and large intestines
  2. Describe the physiologic processes involved in bowel elimination

Assessment of Bowel Function

  1. Identify interview questions pertinent to the assessment of bowel elimination
  2. Describe physical assessment techniques for bowel function
  3. Identify abnormal findings in assessment of bowel function
  4. Describe typical variations in assessment findings for the older adult

Gastric Disorders

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of gastric disorders, including gastritis, ulcerative disease, and cancer of the stomach
  2. Relate the manifestations of gastric disorders to the pathophysiologic processes
  3. Identify laboratory and diagnostic tests used to diagnose disorders of the stomach
  4. Discuss the nursing implications for medications prescribed for the client with a gastric disorder
  5. Provide appropriate perioperative care for the client who has had gastric surgery
  6. Use the nursing process to assess needs, plan and implement individualized care, and evaluate responses for the client with a gastric disorder

Elimination Disorders

  1. Discuss the pathophysiology, manifestations, and management of bowel absorption and elimination disorders
  2. Identify laboratory and diagnostic tests used to diagnose disorders of the small and large bowel
  3. Discuss the nursing implications and medications used in managing bowel absorption and elimination disorders
  4. Compare and contrast the manifestations and care of clients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease
  5. Discuss the care of client with a colostomy or ileostomy
  6. Provide appropriate nursing care for the client in the perioperative phases of intestinal surgery
  7. Provide appropriate teaching for clients with bowel absorption and elimination disorder and their families

Common Skin Disorders

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of common skin disorders, including pruritus, dry skin, and psoriasis
  2. Compare and contrast the pathophysiology, collaborative care, and nursing care of clients with infections and infestations of the skin
  3. Discuss various inflammatory disorders of the skin, including dermatitis, acne, pemphigus valgaris and toxic epidermal necrolysis
  4. Compare and contrast the pathophysiology, collaborative care, and nursing care of clients with benign and malignant neoplasms
  5. Discuss factors contributing to the development of pressure ulcers
  6. Discuss the pathophysiology of selected common disorders of the hair and nails
  7. Identify laboratory and diagnostic tests used to diagnose various disorders of the integumentary system
  8. Discuss nursing implications for pharmacologic agents used to treat disorders of the integument
  9. Discuss surgical options for excision of neoplasms, reconstruction of facial or body structures and cosmetic procedures
  10. Provide client and family teaching appropriate for prevention and self-care disorders of the integumentary system
  11. Use the nursing process to assess needs and to plan and implement care for clients with common disorders of the skin

NEUROSENSORY – EYES AND EARS

Review of Anatomy and Physiology

  1. Identify the extraocular and intraocular structures
  2. Describe the visual pathway
  3. Define refraction and accommodation
  4. Identify the components and function of the external, middle and inner ear
  5. Describe how sound is conducted

Assessment of Eye and Ear

  1. Describe the physical assessment of the ye and ear

The Client with and Infectious or Inflammatory Eye Disorder

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of commonly occurring disorders of the eyes and ears, relating their manifestations to the pathophysiologic process
  2. Identify diagnostic tests used to diagnose eye and ear disorders
  3. Discuss the nursing implications for medications prescribed for clients with eye and ear disorders
  4. Provide appropriate care for the client having eye or ear surgery
  5. Use the nursing process to assess needs, plan and implement individualized care, and evaluation responses for the client impaired vision or hearing

  4. Identify manifestations of impairment in the function of the genitourinary system
  5. Describe variations in assessment findings for the older adult

Urinary Tract Disorders

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of commonly occurring disorders of the urinary tract, including infections, calculi, tumors, urinary retention, neurogenic bladder, and urinary incontinence
  2. Identify laboratory and diagnostic tests used to diagnose disorders of the urinary tract
  3. Compare and contrast the manifestations of common disorders of the urinary tract
  4. Use the nursing process as a framework for providing individualized care to clients with disorders of the urinary tract

Review of Anatomy and Physiology – Reproductive system

  1. Identify the major structures of the reproductive systems of men and women
  2. Identify the functions of the reproductive organs in men and women
  3. Describe the functions of sex hormones of mean and women

Assessment of Reproductive Function

  1. Identify interview questions pertinent to the assessment of reproductive function in men and women
  2. Describe physical assessment techniques for reproductive function in men and women
  3. Identify manifestations of impairment in reproductive function in men and women
  4. Describe normal variations in assessment findings for older men and women

Female Reproductive System Disorders

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of common disorders of the female reproductive system
  2. Identify laboratory and diagnostic tests used to diagnose disorders of the female reproductive system
  3. Discuss nursing implications for medications prescribed for the client with disorders of the female reproductive system.
  4. Provide appropriate preoperative and postoperative nursing care of the client having gynecologic surgery
  5. Use the nursing process as a framework for providing individualized care to clients with disorders of the female reproductive system

FLUID AND ELECTROLYTES

Fluid Volume Disorders

  1. Discuss the functions, compartments and regulatory mechanisms that maintain water balance in the body
  2. Compare and contrast the causes, effects, and care of the client with fluid volume deficit and fluid volume excess

Electrolyte Disorders

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of imbalances of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus
  2. Compare and contrast the manifestations of electrolyte imbalances
  3. Provide teaching about diet and medications used to treat or prevent electrolyte disorders
  4. Recognize normal values, as well as values representing a deficit or excess, of electrolytes in the blood

Acid-Base Disorders

  1. Identify the causes and effects of acid-base imbalance
  2. Identify laboratory and diagnostic tests used to diagnose and monitor treatment of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base disorders
  3. Use arterial blood gas findings to identify the type of acid-base imbalance

present in a client

  1. Use the nursing process as a framework to provide individualized nursing care to clients with fluid, electrolyte, or acid-base disorders

  2. Describe physical assessment of the upper airway

Nursing Care of Clients with Upper Respiratory Disorders

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of common disorders affecting the upper respiratory tract, relating their manifestations to the pathophysiologic process
  2. Identify laboratory and diagnostic tests used to diagnose upper respiratory disorders
  3. Discuss the nursing implications for pharmacology interventions and other treatments prescribed for clients with upper respiratory disorders
  4. Provide care for client having surgery involving the upper respiratory system
  5. Identify nursing care needs for the client with an endotracheal tube or tracheostomy
  6. Use the nursing process to assess client need, plan and implement individualized care, and evaluate responses for the client with an upper respiratory system disorder
