Vocabulary Midterm
- Learning Target- A goal for what the class should have learned by the end of the day/lesson.
- Superstition- Believing in supernatural event, result, or action with no evidence that it is true. (Ghosts, seeing a black cat, breaking a mirror etc…)
- Infer- To make a guess using evidence
- Delinquent- A young person who gets in a lot of trouble.
- Paraphrase-Summarizing or restating something in your own words.
- Envy- To be jealous of, wanting what someone else has.
- Frieze- A sculpture or painted decoration
- Solstice- The longest or shortest part of the year, when the sun is either the highest (summer) or the lowest (winter)
- Cite- Quoting text as evidence
- Eavesdrop- To listen in on a conversation when you shouldn’t
- Pulverize- To defeat, or crush someone/something completely.
- Conjugate- To give different forms, like verb tenses.
- Vitally- Very important, necessary
- Stele- An upright stone, like a headstone
- Hallucination- Seeing things that aren’t actually there
- Kleptomaniac- Someone who is always stealing things
- Deliberately- Something done on purpose
- Miffed- Annoyed, or upset
- Scowled- To frown in an angry way
- Expulsion- Forcing someone to leave, like being expelled or suspended
- Vivid- Strong and clear images in the mind
- Dyslexia- Difficulty reading words, letters, and symbols
- Incinerate- To destroy by burning
- Primitive- Early, basic stages of life and development
- Gingerly- Very carefully
- Pseudonym- A fake name, usually used by an author
- Endeavor- Trying hard to reach a goal
- Prominently- Easily seen, stands out clearly
- Maiming- To injure severely, so badly it may lead to death
- Skewered- To run through (with something like a spear or shish-kebab)
- Liability- Being responsible for something, usually by law
- Elated- Very happy and excited
- Flanked- On the side of something, guarding or defending, often used in the military
- Cantered- The movement of a horse between a trot and gallop (what humans would consider a jog)
- Glumly- Feeling sad or depressed
- Carnage- The killing of a large number of people (like the destructions of war)
- Melancholy- Very sad and unhappy (A synonym to glum)
- Foreshadowing- Predicting a future event, a warning about what is to come
- Misnomer- The wrong use of a name
- Alliteration- The repetition of the same letter or sound in 2 or more words next to each other
- Onomatopoeia- A word that is a sound (like boom, pop, crackle)
- Simile- A comparison using like or as
- Impertinent- Not showing respect, rude
- Humane- Showing kindness, and having sympathy for (usually when talking about animals)
- Decency/Decent- Good behavior, not outstanding or bad, just decent
- Marveled- Be filled with amazement, awe, or astonishment
- Ignorant-Lacking knowledge, or uneducated
- Deception- Tricking or misleading someone
- Oblige- To require someone to do something
- Indignation- Annoyance or anger (usually because of unfair treatment)
- Vagrants- A homeless person who wanders from place to place
- Adjective- A word that describes a noun
- Adverb- Modifies (describes) another adverb, adjective or noun. Answers questions like how, where and when
- Skeptically- Having doubts or mistrust of someone
- Proposition/Propose- A suggested plan or agreement
- Defunct- No longer existing, unused, run-down
- Marooned- Someone trapped in a place they can not escape
- Trajectory- The path of a flying object
- Mystified- Confused or unsure
- Impeding- Delay, stop or prevent
- Tinkered-Repair or improve something
- Gruff-Someone speaking in a rough and low voice
- Grazed- To touch or rub lightly in passing
- Sputtering- Soft explosive sounds, or spitting out words/sounds that you can’t understand
- Dissipating-Scatter, dissolve, or disappear
- Scribe-A person who keeps records or writes things down
- Ritual- A religious ceremony or repeated act that has meaning and purpose
- Perimeter-The border or outside space
- Area- The amount of space inside a border
- Whim- A sudden desire or change of mind (unusual or unexpected)
- Notion-A feeling, or idea about something
- Apprehensive- Anxious or fearful that something bad will happen
- Disposition- Inherent qualities, or personality
- Adhere- Stick to
- Solemn- Serious, not cheerful
- Beckon- Motion, or gesture with the hand to come near or follow
- Haughty- Arrogant, Prideful (Thinking you’re better than other people)
- Immense- Extremely large
- Ambiguous- Has a double meaning, unclear
- Throng- A large densely packed crowd
- Anomaly- Something different than what was expected
- Dystopian-Imagined place where everything is unpleasant or bad
- Perforate-To pierce with small holes (the edges of a page might be perforated)
- Scabbard- A sheath for a sword
