Objectives: Students will be able to:

l  use synonyms to make their writing more interesting by avoiding the use of the same word repeatedly

l  write a biography about an imaginary hero

Materials:

l  A PowerPoint presentation — Super Word Kid 2 – Your Superhero

l  Pictures of famous characters from cartoons or comics

l  LT 2.1 – Writing Worksheet

l  LT 2.2 – Peer Review Sheet

Procedure:

Warm up (5 minutes)

1.  Show students some pictures of famous characters from cartoons or comics. Ask students to describe them from their background, appearance, outfits, character and special power.

Build a mind map (10 minutes)

1.  Distribute LT 2.1. Read the biography of Super Word Kid on page 2.

2.  Ask, “What do you know about Super Word Kid from this article?”

3.  In groups, students are asked to discuss and complete a mind map about Super Word Kid. Write down what students report and group the information on the board:

3. Design your superhero

4.  Ask students to create a superhero who can help Super Word Kid.

5.  Ask them to build a mind map about this hero.

4. Paragraphing: Organization of the Biography

6.  Point out that different parts of the map should go into different paragraphs.

7.  Demonstrate by using the sample in PowerPoint slides 3-5.

Peer Review

1.  Distribute LT 2.2. Ask students to work in pairs and comment on each other’s work according to the items on the Checklist.

2.  Students should share and note down comments / suggestions on the draft / sheet.

3.  They should consider suggestions from peers and make changes on their draft where appropriate.

4.  Show-and-tell: Invite students to share their work in the lesson. Then post the interesting and creative works on the board.
