Visual Arts Works on Display

The visual arts students currently have artwork on display at Salemtowne through May 4th. If you would like to visit, the gate guard will give you directions to where the arwork is hanging.

The visual arts students will have artwork on display at the MiltonRhodesCenter this month. The opening gala is on Friday, March 20 at 6 p.m. The Spring Arts Extravaganza will feature artwork from all schools in the county. Modern Automotive will host an awards reception at the opening and honor selected students. There will also be refreshments and a free kids art activity area.

Changes Affect Arts Magnet Director Position

In order to meet the needs of our students and have reasonable class sizes, new Math 1sections were created for second semester. As a result, theArts Magnet Director position was reduced.

Demon Shop

Mornings and evenings are still chilly, so come by and purchase a hoodie or a crew neck sweatshirt. We have many new sweatshirts and T-shirts in the Demon Shop. Dancing Boots Tryouts

Dancing Boots tryouts will be held May 12-14. Please look at Mrs. Reece's website for complete details:

A Dancing Boots pre-tryout workshop will be held on Saturday, April 25 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Rising eighth graders are encouraged to attend to prepare for tryouts. You must pre-register for the workshop with Mrs. Reece no later than April 22.Anyone not registered will not be permitted to attend.Allparticipants MUST have a current physical on file with RJR Athletics to participate. Goodwill Drive

The annual Donate-to-Educate Goodwill Drive begins this week!The truck will be in the parking lot close to Hawthorne Road from Monday, March 16th to Friday, March 27th. It will be open from 8:00 - 8:30 a.m. and from 3:45 - 4:30 p.m. each weekday. The truck will also be open on Saturday, March 21st from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

The is an annual Goodwill Drive that is also a competition among the area high schools. The winner is decided based on the total weight of donations!

Please start your spring cleaning and bring your donations to help RJR AND Goodwill Industries!

Prom 2015

RJR’s Prom will be held on Saturday, April 11. More details to come.

Jeannette Anderson Parker Memorial Scholarship

The amount of this non-renewable scholarship is $2,000. The student selected will be someone who best exemplifies Jeannette’s character and values—someone thoroughly engaged in life, someone who strives to make every day count. This student will be someone who can balance academics with athletics, leadership and service. The recipient will temper drive with compassion, head with heart.

Criteria:

* High academic standards

* Participation in school-sponsored athletics

* Strong character and leadership skills

* School and community involvement

* Financial need may be a consideration

* The scholarship is available to students regardless of race, sex, national origin, religion or handicap.

Application Procedure:

Students interested in being considered for the scholarship award should submit the following to Ms. Mary Ann McClain in the R. J. Reynolds guidance office no later than April 15, 2015:

* Transcript of high school courses through first semester 12th grade

* High School resume

* Personal statement not exceeding one page that describes how they fit the criteria described

* One school recommendation (from guidance, teacher, or coach)

RJR volleyball is starting its second beach volleyball season this month. We are excited to see the growth of the sport at RJR and in ForsythCounty schools.

Booster Club News

The Booster Club will hold its final meeting of the school year on Monday, March 16th at 6:00 p.m. in the media center.All are welcome to attend! Mark your calendar for the All-Sports Celebration on Monday, May 11th at 6:30 in the auditorium.

Congratulations to the RJR Lady Demon basketball team on their historic, 27-1 season and for making it to the regional semi-finals! A lot of hard work and determination certainly paid off!

Winter sports have wrapped up and we had many individuals make it to the state competitions!In wrestling, Jamen Senter qualified to compete in the 195 weight class at the state level. Indoor track was represented at the state meet by Andrew Ciaccia (7th in the 3200 meter), Nick Ciaccia (4th in the 1600 meter) and Joe Wilson (3200 meter run). Swimmers who qualified for the state swim meet were: Emma Nicklas-Morris (11th in 100-yard butterfly),Joseph Durham (100- yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle),Josh Slater (5th in the 200-yard butterfly and 7thin the 50-yard freestyle), and the relay team of Joseph Durham, Mason Fowler, Josh Lenchik and Josh Slater for 10th in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
