Hannover - a shopper's paradise

Whether it's a relaxing session of retail therapy or a quick errand – Hannover's great selection of shops, all within easy reach thanks to its compact layout and excellent transport infrastructure, make it a premium-quality shopping destination. The pedestrian precinct is one of the most popular shopping areas in the whole of Germany, and virtually no other city boasts such a high concentration of shopping centres and arcades, specialist stores, restaurants and cafés. Every conceivable retail sector is represented within a radius of just 400 metres. Outside the city centre, shopping streets such as Lister Meile, Limmerstrasse and Lindener Markt are full of character and offer a myriad of special shopping and dining outlets.

Hannover is a real shopping paradise. Germany's biggest pedestrian precinct – covering the area between Steintor Plaza, Kröpcke and the main train station – is home to shopping arcades, department stores and specialist shops, and attracts people from far beyond the region. A great all-weather shopping destination full of lifestyle appeal is the Ernst August Galerie with its 150 shops, cafés and restaurants spread over three levels. The Niki de Saint Phalle promenade and the Kröpcke Passage and Galerie Luise arcades also offer a diverse mix of shops and eateries.

Opposite the opera house, luxurious boutiques full of haute couture and elegant jewellery line the exclusive Georgstrasse boulevard: perfect for a leisurely stroll. And for a relaxing shopping experience without any rush, why not try one of the special Sunday trading days, which are also extremely popular in the surrounding regions? Hannover's late-night shopping events are a treat for romantic souls, with outdoor fashion shows, music groups and the odd glass of prosecco providing style and musical inspiration as shoppers wander the city's streets. Shopping in the area around the Marktkirche in Hannover's old town is a particular pleasure, with its half-timbered houses, elegant boutiques, art galleries and traditional bars.

Another gem in this area is the flea market by the river Leine: a Saturday event not to be missed! During winter time from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday (summer time 8 am to 4 pm), the three Nanas invite everyone to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and to stroll, browse, observe, haggle and wander around “Am Hohen Ufer”, on the High Bank that gave Hannover its name.Art and kitsch, bric-à-brac and junk: these are the things that visitors look to find there, not to mention watercolours, picture frames or antique lamps. Here you can find not only whole chests full of things from Grandma’s day, but also pictures, jewellery, comics and gramophone records.

And just around the corner, you will find the 'Stomach of Hannover', the city's famous Market Hall with virtually everything under the sun: from fruit, seafood and bread to flowers – and even the daily paper. It's the perfect place to taste specialities from all around the world.

Particularly at lunch times, it’s a pleasure to stop and take a break in the Market Hall, as numerous stalls offer hot and cold food to eat on the spot. People like to meet for a glass of sparkling wine or a cappuccino and a chat.

No, it’s not a district of Hannover ...

… on the contrary, Hannover is an appendage of Linden, everybodyin Linden knows that.And Linden is a real insider’s tip for shoppers: there are lots oflittle boutiques and shops offering trendy styles and accessoriessuch as are only to be found in such a laid-back “scene” area.

To the right and left of Limmerstrasseand around the Market Place there is an abundance of teeming,colourful life. Students, university lecturers, eccentrics, peoplefor whom life is an art form, they all practically live on thestreets. This is a district to go out and to party in! Pubs, cafés,kiosks and restaurants are to be found on every corner; theextent of the party triangle is marked by the venues Béi ChézHeinz, Café Glocksee and the Faust Culture Centre.

Charming and family-friendly:

Lister Meile and Podbielskistrasse are the two main arteries ofthe List district. Many families value highly the quieter, moremiddle-class atmosphere and the numerous shopping opportunitiesto be found both on the main streets and in the sidestreets. People meet for a glass of good wine, go to the theatre(Theater in der List e.V.), or attend a reading or a concert in thePavillon. Shopping is the main topic in the List, whether on ListerMeile or around Wedekindplatz; everywhere you go you will seepeople with shopping bags full to bursting.

And outside the city itself, the region's smaller towns such as Wedemark, Burgdorf, Neustadt, Barsinghausen and Wunstorf offer a surprisingly rich variety of shopping experiences and the chance to combine this with a spot of sightseeing or a mini-break in the countryside.
