Visions of A Nonviolent World Assignment

In this assignment you will describe your vision of a nonviolent world. What is your idea of a nonviolent world? What would happen in order to make the world a better, less violent place? What would your ideal world look or feel like?

“It is important to hold on to our visions and hopes for a nonviolent world. Yet, it is especially difficult to hold on to your visions when we encounter conflicts every day or when we see our leaders advocating war. Again and again we see glorified images of the powerful and the aggressive. But we have to wonder whether their victories are empty because they come at the expense of others. There is an Ethiopian proverb, “When two elephants fight, the grass suffers,” Whether violence occurs as a fight between two individuals or a war between several countries, it affects our environment and it affects people who had nothing to do with the original conflict.”

Remember that peace is not merely the absence of violence, but it is also the presence of opportunity. Think of groups, people that practice peace and provide social, economic, educational and spiritual opportunities for members of your community.

Your assignment is to describe your vision of a more peaceful world. You can express this in a variety of ways: a drawing, painting, rap, poem, story, song, quote(s), etc. The piece does not have to be an original; it can be from another artist. You will present this to the class, so be prepared to discuss and explain what your vision is and why. If it is a rap, poem, story or song, please have the lyrics on a hard copy to turn in. Your presentation or interpretation will be oral, but you do have to have it in writing as well. Remember to provide correct citation for your source if it is not your own original work.

Be creative!
