Here beginneth the proper of the festivals of holy men and holy women according to the use of the church of Sarum; and firstly on the Vigil of St. Andrew, the apostle.
Vigil of St. Andrew the Apostle [Nov. 29th.]
At Mass. Office.
The Lord walking by the sea of Galilee saw two brethren, Peter and Andrew, and he called them. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.Ps. The heavens declare the glory of God : and the firmament sheweth his handy-work.
Collect.
We beseech thee, almighty God, that the blessed apostle Andrew may implore thy aid on our behalf; and that, being absolved from all our sins, we may likewise be delivered from all dangers. Through &c.
The memory of the martyrs shall be made if this vigil shall fall before Advent., but not if it shall fall within.
Collect.
O God, who permittest us to keep the festival of thy blessed martyrs, Saturninus and Sisinnius, grant unto us that we may be aided by their merits. Through &c.
The Lesson.Ecclus. xliv. 22-23, xlv. 1-7.
The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the righteous. Therefore he gave him an heritage, and divided his portion among the twelve tribes. And he found favour in the sight of all flesh; and he magnified him so that the enemies stood in awe of him. By his words he caused the wonders to cease; he made him glorious in the sight of kings, and shewed him his glory. He sanctified him in his faithfulness and meekness, and chose him out of all men. He gave him commandments before his face, even the law of life and knowledge, and exalted him. An everlasting covenant he made with him; He beautified him with comely ornaments, and clothed him with the robe of glory.
Gradual.
How dear are thy counsels unto me, O God : O how great is the sum of them. V. If I tell them, they are more in number than the sand.
If this vigil fall on a Sunday, the following is said:
Alleluya. V. Their sound is gone out into all lands : and their words unto the ends of the world.
Mass shall be said in chapter. And this rule is to be observed in the case of all Masses proper to vigils which fall on a Sunday, except only in the case of the vigil of Christmas Day.
The Gospel. John i. 35-51
Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Thou hast crowned him with glory and worship, and madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands, O Lord.
Secret.
We offer, O Lord, this gift to be consecrated unto thee, whereby we who celebrate the feast of thy blessed apostle Andrew, with fasting and devout services, implore also the purification of our minds. Through &c.

Graciously accept, O Lord, the gift offered unto thee for the passion of thy blessed martyrs Saturninus and Sisinnius ; and at their intercession let it be acceptable to thy majesty. Through &c.

How dear are thy counsels unto me, O God : O how great is the sum of them. Ps. O Lord, thou hast searched me out and known me : thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising.
Glory be to the Father, &c.
If this Feast fall outside Advent Glory be to God on high, &c., is said: but if it fall within Advent, then after the Collect We make our humble supplications &c. there shall be a memory of Advent and of St. Mary. And this rule shall be observed in the case of all feasts of saints which shall fall within Advent.

We make our humble supplications unto thy majesty, O Lord, that like as the blessed apostle Andrew was set to be both a preacher and ruler of thy Church, so he may be the perpetual intercessor before thee on our behalf. Through &c.
The Epistle. Rom. x. 10-18
Brethren, with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

Thou shalt make them princes in all lands; I will remember thy name, O Lord. V. Instead of thy fathers' thou shalt have children : therefore shall the people give thanks unto thee.
Alleluya. V. The Lord loved Andrew for an odour of sweet savour.

The sacred honours of this festival
With praises due let the whole Church ordain ;
The gentlest of the saints she celebrates,
Andrew, for wondrous grace conspicuous.
When from John Baptist the apostle learned
That One had come who should take sins away,
Entering his house forthwith, he heard his word ;
And, having found his brother Barjona,
Rejoicing saith, " Messias we have found ! "
And led him to the Saviour's gentle presence.
By the sea-side Christ called him, and exchanged
His fisher's craft for apostolic rank —
His soul, after the glorious Paschal feast,
The Holy Ghost did hallow by his power.
And sent him forth to call men to repentance,
And through the Son show God the Father's mercy,
In such a Father boast thyself, Achaia !
Illuminated by his saving doctrine.
Honoured by divers signs and miracles.
Lament and groan, fierce murderer Egeas,
Thee plagues of hell and death eternal hold ;
Whilst Andrew through the cross in joy abides.
Now thou dost see thy king ; now thou adorest ;

Be thou to us an excellent perfume,
Health-breathing balsam of the life to come.
Note that a Sequence is to be said at Mass on all feasts of nine or three lessons, with ruling of the quire, outside the period between Septuagesima and Easter, except on feasts of many Confessors, and on the feast of St. Michael in the mountain Tomb [Oct. 1 6]. But on octaves and within octaves, whether they be kept with ruling of the quire or not, a Sequence is not said at Mass, except throughout the octaves and on the octaves of the Visitation, the Assumption, and the Nativity of blessed Mary; and on the Sunday within the octave, and on the octave of the Dedication of a church, and on the octave of the apostles Peter and Paul.

At that time, Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

Preface.
And humbly to beseech &c.
This Preface is said on all feasts of apostles and evangelists, and throughout the octaves of the apostles Peter and Paul, and Andrew, except on the feast of St. John the apostle in Christmas week. But it is to be said on the octave of that same festival, and on the festival of that same saint in Easter-tide.
Communion.
Follow me ; I will make you fishers of men : and they left their nets and the ship, and followed the Lord.
Postcommunion.
We have received, O Lord, the divine mysteries, and rejoiced in the festival of blessed Andrew ; and we beseech thee, that as thou makest thy saints to be thereby glorified, so thou wouldest also make it to be profitable for our pardon. Through &c.
The Mass of St. Andrew is said throughout the octave as on the first day, but without Sequence and Creed, and except when the Mass I am the salvation etc' remains to be sung; and except on Saturday when there is a full service of St. Mary, and except within the season of Advent. Within Advent there will be no part of the Mass of St. Andrew except the memory, until the octave: then the whole service shall be of that saint, unless it shall fall on a Saturday or a Sunday. In that case the Mass of the octave is said in chapter. But when the feast of St. Andrew is deferred from Sunday to Monday, then on the following Sunday the Mass of the octave shall be said in chapter, together with one Collect. In the same way when the feast of St. Nicholas is deferred from Sunday to Monday, then the Mass of the octave is said in chapter on the Monday itself, similarly with one Collect. In the same way only one Collect is said at the mass which is said in chapter on the octave of St. Laurence, and at the Mass of St. Sabina.

Therefore was there a covenant of peace made with him by the Lord, that he should be the chief of the sanctuary, and of his people ; and that he and his posterity should have the dignity of the priesthood for ever. Ps. My song shall be alway of the loving-kindness of the Lord.

Almighty and everlasting God who makest us to rejoice this day in the feast of thy blessed confessor and bishop Osmund ; we humbly pray thy mercy, that through the holy prayers of him whose feast we devoutly venerate, we may obtain the recompense of eternal life. Through &c.
The Lesson. Ecclus. xliv. 16, 17, 19-23, xlv. 3, 7, 16.
Behold a High Priest who in his day pleased the Lord, and was found righteous; in the time of wrath he was taken in exchange. In glory there was none like unto him, who kept the law of the most High; therefore He assured him by an oath that he would make him increase among his people. Therefore did He establish likewise the blessing of all men, and the covenant, and made it rest upon his head. He acknowledged him in His blessing, and He brought out of him a merciful man, which found favour in the sight of the Lord, and He made him glorious in the sight of kings, and gave him a crown of glory. An everlasting covenant He made with him, and gave him the priesthood among the people; and clothed him with a robe of glory, to execute the office of the priesthood, and to bless the people in His Name; to offer to Him incense, and a sweet savour.
Gradual.
The Lord sware and will not repent : thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedech.V. The Lord said unto my Lord : sit thou on my right hand.
Alleluya. V. The righteous shall grow up as a lily, and shall flourish for ever before the Lord.
Sequence.
Which brings to us great joy,
When holy Church gives thanks acceptable to God.
This day the heavenly host sings, Glory in the highest,
With voice and symphony melodious.
This day the holy armies of the heavens
Unite with us in praise of God our king,
Christ, of the holy virgin Mary born.
