The picture shows the different living conditions of the middle class and of the working class. The poor families live ( not only work) in the mine in appalling conditions. The woman on the left represents the Royal Navy (or Britain),look at the anchor; the cherub who is whispering into its/her ear, symbolizes God’s benevolence

RickBurners (a nickname given to farm labourers) targetedthreshing machinesbecause in the winter when work was hard to find, farm labourers would be employed to do the threshing. By the 1820’s farmershad invested in Steam driven threshing machines in order to save money on wages. This angered farm labourers because they could not possibly compete with the machines and farmers were employing fewer regular labourers which left many without a job.

The title is linked to theRebecca Riotsthat took place between 1839 and 1843 inWales.They were a series of protests undertaken by local farmers and agricultural workers in response to unfair taxation. The rioters, often men dressed as women, took their actions againsttoll-gates as they were tangible representations of high taxes and tolls.
