FALL CONFERENCE 2012

Innovations in Theory of Mind Assessment & Intervention for Children with

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Presented By

Patricia A. Prelock, PhD, CCC-SLP

Friday, September 21, 2012

Inn at Essex, Essex, Vermont

Workshop Description: This workshop is intended for clinicians, educators, speech and language pathologists, school psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and administrators. It will describe innovative methods for assessing Theory of Mind in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) using both parent report and broad based theory of mind measures. Case examples will be used to identify areas of challenge in theory of mind, develop goals and recommend strategies for intervention. The use of priming, social stories, comic strip conversations, video modeling (including video self-modeling), and thought pictures and emotions will be explained as strategies to facilitate theory of mind and perspective taking in children with ASD. Videotaped examples of theory of mind assessment and intervention will be presented.

Educational Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify valid and reliable methods for assessing theory of mind in children with ASD.
  2. Develop goals for intervention based on data gathered from assessment of theory of mind.
  3. Explain at least two interventions that can facilitate perspective taking in children with ASD.

The Vermont Association of School Psychologists (VASP) was organized to address the needs of school psychologists in Vermont. The Association has four purposes: to serve the mental health and educational needs of all children and youth; to encourage and provide opportunities for the professional growth of members; to inform the public about the services and the practice of psychology in schools; and, to advance the standards of the profession of school psychology.
VASP is affiliated with the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the Vermont Psychological Association (VPA). Those who practice in schools are encouraged to join VASP, NASP, and VPA.
VASP, through its members, has a goal of providing leadership and direction in addressing the needs of children and schools and in the provision of school psychological services. VASP also provides continuing education workshops on school-related issues; disseminates information to members on local, state, and national issues related to the profession; and fosters communication among Vermont psychologists and school psychologists who are engaged in school-based practice, in whole or in part.
