This is our last class meeting before Christmas. There will be an assignment sheet sent over the holidays, due when we return in 2011. On December 7/9 we will have a class party at the end of the day. Please bring in your favorite snack to share with the class. Also, please bring quarters for the mission project -Sudanese Bible translation project.

Bible: Complete Lesson 17 in Bible Study Course, answering all questions Be able to locate and to identify Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Salome, Cleopas. There will be a comprehensive Bible test on the life and ministry of Christ on December 7/9. The study guide was sent in an earlier email and was included on the last assignment sheet.

World Studies: Read chapter 7, pages158-169 to become familiar with Latin America. Answer all section review questions.

World Studies workbook: none this week

Map Studies - Memorize the countries of Central America in order from North to South using the following mnemonic: My Beautiful Girlfriend Helen Eats Nachos, Cake & Pizza. Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama. See! It’s easy! Be able to label them on a map.

Who in the World? Francisco Pizarro, Pedro Casal, Bartolome de las Casas, Simon Bolivar. I will take up all your Who in the World cards when you return from the Christmas break instead of this week. Please use the Christmas break to catch up on all of your cards.

Literature: Read Remarkable Incident of Dr. Lanyon through The Last Night. Finish the attached worksheets.

Grammar: Complete Unit 9. Do all exercises on pp. 235-238. DO NOT DO THE SECTION ON THE CAUSE-EFFECT ESSAY. WE WILL DO THIS AT A LATER DATE. Be prepared for a test on Unit 9 on 12/07/10.

Journal:: Entry #14-- In a good paragraph tell us about your "Most Memorable Christmas." When was it, what did you do, etc.

Logic: There will be no new logic assignment for this week. We will complete our discussion from last week.

Vocabulary: Begin the review of Units 4-6. Complete pp. 73-77A (through Antonyms).

IEW: Finish the assignment at the end of this assignment sheet.

Writing Assignment:

  1. We will begin making a key word outline in class. You will need to complete it if we run out of class time before we finish.
  1. Using the keyword outline, write a summary of this story, but change the story to make it your own. You may change the names and number of characters, the setting of the story, and any of the details, but you’ll need to make sure we can recognize the original story at least a little bit.
  1. Use dress-ups and be sure to avoid using those banned adjectives and verbs.
  1. Try to keep it short. Ideally, you would be able to read your story in two to three minutes once it’s finished.
  1. Have fun! This is your chance to be as silly or as serious as you like.

What was your reaction when Poole explained that he had heard Hyde "weeping like a woman or a lost soul" inside the cabinet? Did learning this change your feelings about Mr. Hyde? Why or why not?

Analyzing Literature

1. What happens to Dr. Lanyon at the beginning of the section? What suspicions do you have about the cause of this occurrence? What might be a reason for Stevenson's not telling us what happened to Lanyon? What other important details are left unexplained at this point?______

2. What do Utterson and Poole find when they break into the cabinet? What do they expect to find that is not in the cabinet? How do they explain this mystery?______

3. What is the weather like as Utterson and Poole hurry to Jekyll's house? Discuss how Stevenson uses descriptive language in this passage to create a mood appropriate to the climax of the story.______

4.Authors often give their characters names that are symbolic. Do you think any names in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are symbolic? Find evidence in the story to support your interpretations.______

5. One issue raised by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is that of drug abuse. How does a person who is abusing drugs change in personality, appearance, and habits? What evidence in this section of the novella indicates that one of the characters is abusing drugs?______

In this section of the novella, Jekyll becomes more and more isolated, cutting himself off from his closest friends. Why is isolation dangerous for Dr. Jekyll? What does he sacrifice by shunning all his friends? Assuming the role of Utteson, write a letter to Dr. Jekyll, explaining why he should not isolate himself from his friends during times of emotional distress. Use details from the story to convince Jekylll of your position.
