Students:
Paper

Objectives:
-Students will identify reasons that different people can be outcast or picked on.
-Students will gain the feeling that we are “all friends” in Mr. Cody’s classroom.
-Students will demonstrate what being a “friend to everyone” means in their own words by writing their own verse to Veggie Tale’s “I Can Be Your Friend.”
Hook:
-Play song and music video for students.
Transition:
-Ask students to close their eyes.
-Reaffirm that if each student closes their eyes, then we know that each student is trusting the others to do the same thing.
-Ask students to raise their hand if the have ever felt outcast or bullied.
-Have students open their eyes and retrieve a piece of paper.
Lesson:
-We don’t want to feel that way. And God does not want his children to feel that way.
-In Mr. Cody’s class, there is no “in-group” because we are all an “in.”
-In Mr. Cody’s class, we are all friends. Friends do not:
-Laugh at each other for ANY reason (there will be times when we laugh with ).
-Call ANYONE names (except for the one their parents gave them).
-Intentionally bother or hurt someone by touching them in anyway.
Friends DO:
-Invite others to join in.
-Stick up for other friends!
-If someone is harming you with words or touch tell them to stop, and tell ME! Because I’m your friend, and I have your back
-If you see someone harming one of your friends, tell them to stop and tell me! Because I have their back to, just like have yours!
-Enjoy music together!
Activity:
-Students will write a verse to the song “I Can Be Your Friend” in their own words based on their idea of being a friend.
-Student song does not need to match perfectly with the Veggie Tales Song but
should:
-be 16 lines in length
-demonstrate how each student views “being friends” to everyone
-this can include being friends to people of all shapes, sizes, colors,
hair colors, with different clothes and hair styles, with different
languages, cultures etc.
-Students will turn their completed verses in to me.
-Students will sit quietly until each student has finished their verse or until it is time to for conclusion.
-If students do not finish, it is homework.
-If students finish early, with my guitar, having learned the song chorus, I will play the song inserting the finished verses (as many as possible, finishing the rest next time).
Conclusion:
-Remember that in Mr. Cody’s classroom, we will all be friends, because in God’s kingdom we are all brothers and sisters and his children. Let’s pray.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for bringing us to this place where we can show your love
to each other by always being each others’ friends.
Thank you for sending you son to be our friend, to pull us in from being outcast andto forgive us when we fail to be the best friend we can be.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
