‘Mobilising Communities’

VDSCar Driver Role Description

The Volunteer Driver Service requires volunteer car drivers for additional flexibility and support in its service provision. This is a door-to-door service where the driver collects individuals from their home address and transports them to an agreed location at an agreed time and the returns the client to their home address afterwards.

This is similar to the T4U service with the exception that clients are referred by Aberdeenshire Social work and are supported persons of varying ages and vulnerability. Due to the nature of the clients transported and their personal circumstances, we would ask that drivers are very careful to maintain confidentiality.

It is possible that you may be asked to transport very young children, in which case, if you agree to the transport, we would provide you a suitable car seat. If you feel uncomfortable transporting a particular age or gender, please speak to Lynda to let her know and we will not ask you in that instance for your availability.

Volunteers will have to provide two references and agree to a check under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme. You will also go out for an assessment drive in your own vehicle with one of our trainers, which will also include an agreed driving licence check. Full training will be given to individuals, with additional training events taking place during the year. All training is free and expenses can be claimed for attending.

As volunteers use their own vehicle for this purpose they are required to provide proof of tax, insurance and MOT. These will be checked on an annual basis. We will also provide you with a letter to be sent on to your insurance company to inform them that you are using your vehicle in a volunteer capacity – this will not cost you anything.

Clients book the service through the office and Lynda will contact volunteers either by e-mail or by phone depending on the urgency of the run. Volunteers should not feel compelled to agree to providing transport, it is your choice!Should you agree to providing transport, you will be given the details relevant to the run i.e. date, time, address, destination, cost etc.

The expenses for the provision of transport are different from the T4U service payment as there is no fare charged – Social Work Departments are invoiced instead. This means you will note your mileage and transport details on a spreadsheet which should be sent in at the end of each month for payment – for ease, we would ask that you provide your bank account details to Jayne in the finance department for electronic payment. Drivers are allowed an additional £5.00 in expenses for getting snacks and additional expenses for parking etc. will also be reimbursed on the provision of suitable receipts.

Any problems or issues should be reported to Lynda if it is in relation to clients or the run, otherwise please speak to Riian.
