TOWARDS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING
Date: Wednesday 15 August, 2:30-4:30pm

Trainer: Donna King, VACRO
About the workshop: This training session aims to give participants a better understanding of the complexities and issues faced by working with people who have been imprisoned. This session covers the difficulties reintegration into the community after serving time in prison and the impact of imprisonment on the individual, their family, and the wider community.
About the trainer: During the 1990’s Donna King served multiple prison terms in Victoria. Following her final release in March 1998, she engaged in a variety of activities including theatre performance, community education and consultation, sitting on ministerial round tables and working with youth ‘at risk’. In late 2003, Donna joined VACRO where she has worked on the Women’s Mentoring Program, the “Getting out” Video and the “Bridging the Gap” Program for both women and men.
TRANS 101

Trainer: Sally Goldner, TransGender Victoria
About the workshop: This workshop looks at issues relating to transgender people with a focus on the workplace. It covers legal aspects relating to the gender identity attribute of the Equal Opportunity Act, practical issues and explores the truths and myths regarding transgender issues.
About the trainer: Sally Goldner has been with TransGender Victoria since its inception in 1999 and was involved in the inclusion of the gender identity attribute in the Equal Opportunity Act in 2000. She works as an accountant in the community sector, is currently studying Holistic Life counselling, presents on community radio and performs stand-up comedy.
IS THERE A BETTER WAY? RUNNING AN EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

About the workshop: This workshop explores how management committees of not for profit organisations can operate more effecitvely and obtain better outcomes for their organisation. It is a challenging seminar requiring participants to consider why they do things the way they do and whether there is a better way?
About the trainer: Marcus is a barrister who specialises in commercial litigation. He acts for a range of companies, individuals and not-for-profit organisations. He has expertise in corporate governance, privacy, intellectual property and defamation. Marcus is also a volunteer and on the management team of the Oxfam Skillshare Scheme. He has previously been on the management committee of the North Melbourne Legal Service.

Providing support in a team framework can raise a number of challenging issues. By expanding participants understanding of how groups operate this workshop increases their awareness of group dynamics. Participants are invited to explore their own leadership style and the impact they have upon the team. The challenge is - Are you who you think you are?

About the workshop: Managers and staff in the not for profit sector can often (or always) feel overwhelmed. This workshop aims to help participants reflect on achievements, goals and survival strategies. This session gets participants thinking about themselves, their work and their clients and considering their responsibilities to themselves, their clients and their colleagues.
About the trainer: Martin J Cowling has worked with commercial and not for profit organisations for almost twenty years. Currently CEO of People First -Total Solutions, Martin works regularly with individuals and organisations on areas connected with not for profit management, staff motivation, effective volunteer management and constructive personal development. People First -Total Solutions, established in 2003, provides strategic planning, consultancy, project management and HR services.
DEMYSTIFYING THE MEDIA

Trainer: Rachel Maher
About the workshop: This introductory workshop explores and develops a practical understanding of the media. Through discussion and exercises, participants learn to improve the way they get media coverage for an event, campaign, organisation etc. The workshop includes tips on writing media releases, pitching stories to journalists and radio interviewing techniques.
About the trainer: Rachel has many years experience in community and national radio organisations, as well as in the community and non-government sector. She works around Australia as a radio trainer and has done freelance work in other media such as independent film and print.

About the trainer: Karen Mackay has a wealth of training and development experience in the community services sector, having worked for 3 peak bodies and over 200 Victorian community organisations including legal centres, adult education, health organisations and neighbourhood houses. Her approach is strongly based on community development principles and practices.

About the workshop: Giving and receiving feedback is essential for optimal workplace performance and employee satisfaction yet many people struggle with this type of communication. This workshop looks at approaches to overcoming struggles with exchanging feedback around performance.
This workshop is a simple, yet practical guide to preparing for a feedback discussion, managing feedback in a performance context, removing emotional influences, focusing on improving performance and tips to help participants receive feedback most effectively.
About the trainer: Clea Wallage works as a consultant with a strategic human resources consulting company Yellow Edge. Clea is a registered psychologist who has strong experience in people development as well as organisation and team dynamics. Management and human resources support provided has largely revolved around career development issues; workplace change, poor staff performance, poor staff/management relationships and training and development needs. Clea is currently studying a Masters of Organisational Dynamics at RMIT and her key interest areas include organisational and individual development and organisational culture.

Peter undertook Leadership Victoria's Board Orientation Series and Experience Bank Programs in 2006 to provide him with insight into the not for profit sector.
