The 34th Annual Meeting

  1. Attendees: AB Thomson, HS Schwartz, DM Spengler, RC Glattes, T Dovan, J Yu, DR Moore, JL Halpern, E McCarty, M Blanchard, C Temple, D Whitaker, P Wupperman, L Myers, E Weiser, G Hurt, M McFerren, G Gurwitz, TL Bradbury, G White & Chiefs (J Buzzell, J Oryhon, J Schoenecker, N VanZeeland).
  2. Ann H Price MD, executive Director of Vanderbilt Medical Alumni Affairs hosted the evening reception on 5/7/08. The Medical Alumni Association is a terrific organization offering many amenities that many of our alumni are seeing and are quite useful. These include: free access to the Eskind Digital Library (email to receive a medical alumni username and password and locate the website via ), student recreation center, Legends Golf Club discounts, travel, University Club, CMEs and free parking amongst others. Alumni need to purchase an ID Card for only $10. Please call 615.322-2273 or contact Ann 615.343-6337 .
  3. Our request for retroactive CME accreditation was not approved by the Division of CME.
  4. The scientific session was well organized by Brian Thomson and was extremely beneficial. All attendees rated it as good or excellent.
  5. Clarence Temple ( ) wants a list of names and contact numbers or emails for all ortho, spine and neurosurgeons at Vanderbilt.
  6. Cheryl Chunn needs to contact Dr. Temple regarding his potential annual gift offering of Loupes for the residents.
  7. Business Meeting 5/9/08
  8. President Chris Glattes called the meeting to order.
  9. Treasurer Brian Thomson presented the budget status. Of the 247 members ~40 pay annual dues of $150. San Antonio will result in a budget shortfall, which will require additional monies to be contributed by attendees following a final tally of expenses to include tabulation of all the Chiefs’ expenses and retroactive retrieval of CMEs. It might be ~$250 per person.
  10. The membership demands all meetings have CME accreditation. Typically ~10 credits are awarded for full meeting attendance.

  14. Permanent electronic storage of the First VOS Meeting information from Hilton Head SC in 1975, to include minutes and mailing list of Founders.
  15. List of all Hillman Visiting Lecturers beginning in 1977.
  16. Future Meetings:
  17. 2009 April 22-25 San Destin – Ray Lowery housing chair.
  18. 2010 June 1-4 (May 18-22 second choice) Bermuda – Clarence Temple housing chair.
  19. 2011 unknown dates San Destin – Ray Lowery housing chair.
  20. 2012 unknown site.
  21. Officers: Tom Dovan President. Brian Thomson remains treasurer. Ginger Holt 2009 program chairman. Herb Schwartz remains secretary.
  22. Host Gregg Gurwitz did an excellent job of planning facilities, food and social activities and deserves our thanks. He also had connections enabling us to have “chamber of commerce” weather reaching 100 degrees.
  23. Discussion of the role of Industry and Academic Institution relationships as the rules and regulations governing conflict of interest, full disclosure and AdvaMed change the educational and research landscapes. Industry sponsorship remains a critical component of educational meetings and the research enterprise.
  24. The Brooks Funds remains an essential tool to fund resident research which at a level never before seen in this department.
  25. Greg White/Tom Dovan/Chris Glattes and the rest of the “Scrubs” are planning a musical performance for the next VOS meeting. Stay tuned for details……
