POSITION DESCRIPTION

CUSTODIAN I

All ministry positions exist to serve the purpose and spiritual values of Valley Presbyterian Church.

I. Major Purpose:

The basic purpose of this position is to perform a variety of custodial duties required to maintain cleanliness of the interior and exterior appearance of the church chapel, sanctuary, classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, choir rooms, rest rooms, lounge areas, library, nursery, and kitchens. This position will also assist with all church programs, food service, worship services and meeting activities requiring the physical setup and takedown of equipment, furniture and/or food and beverages.

II. Scope:

The scope of this position is the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the church property; and to ensure that all members, visitors, and staff have their facility related needs met.

III. Major Responsibilities:

A. Open buildings for the day, or close and secure buildings based on work schedule.

B. Ensure that the facilities are set up according to work orders and the master calendar.

C.Provide a welcoming presence for people attending the church and meet their facility related requests.

D.Ensure that any facility concerns are communicated to the Facilities Manager.

IV. Specific Responsibilities:

A.Set up and take down equipment, furniture and/or food and beverages necessary for the program, worship and food service activities of the church, according to the master calendar.

B.Periodically adjust all light timers for the change in daylight hours. Replace burned out light bulbs in those fixtures readily accessible.

C.Check all restrooms on a daily basis. Replenish all paper and sanitary products and hand soaps as needed.

D.Empty all trash containers, replace liners as needed and place trash for disposal as directed.

E.Assist in cleaning and maintenance of church grounds and buildings, chapel and sanctuary as needed (dust mop and wet mop tile floors; vacuum carpeting; clean drinking fountains; spot wash windows, countertops, doors, tables, chairs, chancel furniture, around light switches; dust pianos, organs, other furniture as needed).

F.Ensure cleanliness of kitchen facilities.

G.In collaboration with other members of facilities team, assist in other activities as needed and/or directed by the Director, Finance and Operations, to fulfill the needs and/or requests of the Finance and Operations committee, staff, and other church committees and organizations.

H.In collaboration with Facilities Manager, assist with various facilities and vehicle maintenance projects.

V. Working Relationships:

A.Reports to the Facilities Manager.

B.Works cooperatively and respectfully with all members of the VPC staff.

C.Interfaces with outside vendors and contractors as required.

VI. Qualifications:

A.Enthusiastic commitment to Christ.

B.Must be able to use discretion and maintain confidentiality at all times.

C.Strong work ethic.

D.Excellent interpersonal skills.

E.Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment, balance competing priorities and tight deadlines, work under pressure and remain flexible.
