Valerie Singleton

Former BBC Presenter

Valerie Singleton will be best known and remembered as one of the presenters for Blue Peter.

On leaving RADA Valerie joined the Bromley Repertory Company for one year and during her early 20’s she became one of the top voice-over commentators for television commercials. She worked for five years as an actress in the theatre and on television and also appeared on several television advertising magazines - including the Arnold Doodle Show on which she presented on her own on Sunday afternoons on ATV with Arnold Doodle a cartoon character.

Valerie Singleton joined Blue Peter in September 1962 and presented for 10 years what was arguably the most successful programme of its kind with Peter Purves and John Noakes. She undertook the Blue Peter Royal Safari in Kenya with H.R.H. The Princess Anne (now the Princess Royal) on her first visit abroad as the newly appointed President of the Save the Children Fund.

In 1972 Valerie joined Nationwide, the early evening current affairs programme on BBC1 during which time she also undertook a number of Blue Peter Special Assignments which took her all over the world. This was then followed by The Money Programme, which she presented from 1980 to 1988 on BBC2. Her ability to tackle a wide range of business and financial topics during this period endeared her to a corporate marketplace that has made extensive use of her skills.

Valerie has presented many ceremonies including Barnardos Champion Children for four years, (two of which were televised for Nationwide) with Her Royal Highness, The Princess Margaret. Valerie has judged a variety of competitions including the Ian St James short story competition.
