OVERVIEW OF COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Remember that art is subjective. We all have different interests and want to make what we like. This means everyone in the class is not going to be working on the same type of assignments. Your artwork will be evaluated by you, the instructor, and throughout the creation of the artwork. Demonstration of tools, materials and techniques will be given frequently in class on a regular basis. It is important that you attend class every session so that you can take full advantage of these demos when they happen. Some demonstrations will happen organically and not be announced ahead of time. I want to help you develop as an artist. My goal is not to tell you how or what to make. I want to give you the freedom to create what you want within the guidelines of the given assignments. Which are going to be very open to your interpretation.
This is the basic formula we will use to evaluate your work and what you will be using to evaluate your own work.
1.Effort: Did you push yourself beyond what you thought possible within the projects.
2.Work meets requirements: Does work fulfill objectives/criteria of assignment stated at introduction of the project.
3.Innovation in design: Creativity/uniqueness of idea and development.
4.Craftsmanship: Does your work show attention to detail and neatness.
5.Work done on time: Did you complete the assignment in a timely manner within the given guidelines of the project. The project dues dates are flexible if you wish to push your work further.
The main goal of all assignments is to:
*Develop and expand your aesthetic perception (how you view art)
*Develop and expand what you know about art and your skills to express your ideas imaginatively
(verbally and technically). Talking and writing about your art will help you tremendously!!!
*Gain knowledge of historical and cultural developments in art
*Learn and improve craftsmanship.
*Make connections to other cultures and career possibilities for the future.
What you are responsible for:
1. Being polite and considerate of others.
2. Keeping your seat, floor, and bench area clean
3. Be on time
4. Bringing the necessary materials everyday
5. Turning in your work on due date unless otherwise instructed
6. Working on class assignments during the whole period. Do not clean up early unless instructed to do so
7. Give all assignments your full effort. Less amount of effort results in less points for the project.

- Gesture drawing – objects and slides timed
- Detailed contour drawing form observation
- Advanced perspective drawing 1 – 2 – 3 point

Materials:
This is a course that uses a lot of different materials. Therefore you will need to purchase materials for the course that are not provided by the schools art budget. I will only be able to provide bulk papers to draw on, paints and painting pallets, cleaning supplies etc.As the course progresses there will be sufficient notice of such materials. Below is a list of places to purchase materials that you will need as soon as possible. Remember to always use sales and find coupons to save money.

Supply list:
Pad of large Mixed Media paper 18 X 24 inches fro the year. May be shared.
Charcoal Pencils med, hard , soft (4,6b)(Sold in a Pack with sharpener and eraser)
Graphite Pencils, HB, B, 2B, 4b, etc. can get in packs. (cheaper)
Erasers, Kneeded kind (grey) sold individually for graphite drawing
A set of brushes. White Synthetic hair. (I will show example)
2-3 canvas boards or painting panels. 8 x 10 or larger. (when we start to paint later in the semester / year)
Grading:
Grading art is a very difficult process both for educators and students. It is heavily based on the principles and elements of art. What works visually and what does not. Personal opinion has no bearing on the grading process. I follow a simple grading scale. Each assignment is graded on a 100 pt. scale. It is up to the student to evaluate his or her own artwork throughout the lesson and finally using the grading rubric that I will provide. We will do this together in class when the assignments are complete. No assignments are done perfectly so the 100 pt value is for grading scale purposes only.

Please Take this home this week and have your parent/guardian read with you so you are fully aware of what is expected of you throughout the year. Have it signed and bring it back to me so I know you have done this. I will check it off in my role sheet and give it back to you. This will be worth a letter grade so make sure you take care of this as soon as possible.
