Valencia County Rural Committee Notes

6th Meeting –1/16/14 - BNSF

Attendees:

Casey Pena, Marla Molzen, Stephanie Kozemchak, Rhona Espinoza, Debbie Norman, Cristina Jaramillo, Jacobo Martinez, Jill Oglesby, Bart Regelbrugge, , Virginia Graumann. New members: Ray Vigil (PNM), Jay Mooleniszer, Valencia Cty Grants Office) and Sarah Cobb (Sen. Udall’s office).

The meeting began with introductions. For the benefit of the new members, Casey gave an overview of the Rural Committee.

Discussion: Follow-up Action Items

  1. Sarah Cobb can be our access point to reach Kristine Dietz from the Delegation Office. Kristine can help research grants for Valencia County organizations.
  2. Mike Swisher, UWCNM’s AFL-CIO Community Service Liaison, was our guest speaker. He spoke about Tax Help NM and 2-1-1. Hardcopies of an 8.5x11, 2-1-1 poster. An electronic version will be sent out via email.
  3. Committee agreed to pursue member participation with the Isleta tribe. Virginia has a good relationship with Isleta and Casey will contact Laguna. Meetings to be scheduled.
  4. Two subcommittee meetings were held in late 2013: Community Outreach: Ari Herring spoke to non-profits regarding the Community Fund process in November prior to the December 11 proposal deadline and Education: Dr. Angelo Gonzales held his first meeting focusing on Mission: Graduate.
  5. The committee is working with the United South Broadway Corporation, Debbie Norman, on providing Mortgage Assistance to Valencia County. 1/13 presentation to the Juvenile Justice Board and 1/25 event at Wells Fargo in Albuquerque.Debbie will work with local banks to schedule similar mortgage assistance events in Valencia County.
  6. Invite Nick Tellez, new County Manager, to next Rural Committee meeting. - Lawrence Esquibel was not present.
  7. Banks: - Lawrence Esquibel will contact My Bank (Edward Archuleta) and Bank of the West (Russell Griego)
  8. Credit Unions – Casey and Stephanie
  9. Media plan – UWCNM Communications Director, Jeanette Miller and Casey will work on.
  10. After School & Summer Programs - Schedule a meeting with the respective point of contacts to discuss collaboration in Valencia County. - Stephanie

Our next rural committee meeting will be held on Thursday, March 20, 11:30am, at the Henry Perea Building, 750 Morris Road, Los Lunas. All future meetings will be held at the Henry Perea Building.
