Utilizing KCAD GIS Data

Files downloaded from the internet are compressed using WinZip and need to be extracted before they can be used.

Internet Download

Click the ‘Save’ button, to save it to your hard drive.

Download the files to your hard drive and remember where you saved them.

In order to view the map data, you must first install ArcExplorer on your computer. To do so, double-click on the ae2setup.exe file and follow the prompts.

Once the program is fully installed, open it up by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.

Using ArcExplorer to view maps (quick steps CD ROM or the location you downloaded the files to.

  1. In order to view the data, you must add it first by clicking the Add Theme button
  2. Click on your CD drive, or the location where you downloaded the files, to access the data
  3. Highlight the PARCELS
  4. Click the Add Theme button to add as many files as you want (parcels.shp, 911_roads_2005.shp, etc)
  5. Then click Close
  6. Click the checkbox next to the name of the file in the table of contents to turn it on
  7. In order to query the data, you must make it active. You do so by clicking the name of the file in the table of contents (you’ll notice that it now appears raised)
  8. You can then select the identify tool and click on individual parcels bringing up a list of data about each parcel
  9. You can search for a parcel by clicking the Find Features button
  10. You can type any criteria (name, account number, address, etc…)
  11. Then highlight and zoom to it
  12. This tool only allows you to select one parcel at a time
  13. The query builder is a more powerful tool allowing you to: build expressions, select multiple parcels at a time, and generate a text report of all the selected parcels
  14. Measuring distances:
  15. Click “View”, “Scale Bar Properties”, “Map Units”, and select the units you would like to see
  16. Click the dropdown arrow next to the Measure tool button and select the units that match step a
  17. Click the measure tool button, hold your mouse over the point to begin measuring from
  18. Click and hold down the mouse button until you get to the end point
  19. The distance will be displayed in the top left corner of the view

Viewing Table Data:

In addition to viewing the maps, you can also view our data in table format.

  1. Using either Windows Explorer or My Computer, navigate to the data on your CD-ROM, or the location where you downloaded the files,
  2. Find the file of interest, and double-click on the file that ends in “.dbf”
  3. If your computer recognizes the extension, the table will open in Microsoft Excel
  4. If it does not, you can select Microsoft Excel from the list that pops up
