Utah Chapter American Backflow Prevention Association
Annual Conference February 10, 2011
Session 1 USC 10TH Edition
AbstractPresenterHenry Chang
The USC Foundation for Cross-Connection Control and Hydraulic Research has published the long awaited 10th Edition. Updates and changes contained in the 10th Edition will be discussed.
Session 2 Using NIMS / ICS For Emergency Responses
AbstractPresenterPete Keers
At one time or another each of us will most likely be involved in some type of emergency response. This session will explain what the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) and how they function.
Session 3Cross-Connection / Backflow Prevention Back to the Basics Part 1
AbstractPresenterTBA
A number of people are new to the backflow industry while others would like to have a refresher course in cross-connection / backflow basics. This session will discuss cross-connections, backflow prevention, degree of hazard, theories of protection, etc. A practical demonstration of the hydraulic of backflow will be presented.
Session 4How to Respond to a Water Quality Complaint or Backflow Incident
AbstractPresenterTBA
Responses to a water quality complaint or backflow incident are as varied as the agencies that respond. Many of us are focused on one aspect of the response. Suggestions and ideas covering all aspects of a response will be discussed in this session.
Session 5Fire Suppression Systems – What Am I Looking For?
AbstractPresenterBrad Nelson
Those who conduct hazard assessment surveys and plumbing inspections are often confused when they encounter a fire suppression system within a facility. Many of the common types of fire suppression systems one may encounter will be discussed during this presentation.
Session 6Cross-Connection / Backflow Prevention Back to the Basics Part 2
AbstractPresenterTBA
A number of people are new to the backflow industry while others would like to have a refresher course in cross-connection / backflow basics. This session will discuss methods of backflow protection and cross-connection control. Proper installation methods will also be discussed.
Session 7Assembly Testers/Water Purveyors – How to Work Together Effectively
AbstractPresenterTBA
In order for a Cross-connection / backflow prevention program to function properly, there must be a good working relationship between the water purveyor and Assembly tester. This presentation will discuss the importance of each group in this relationship and how to develop that relationship.
Session 8Hydraulic Considerations for Designing and Retrofitting Backflow Applications
AbstractPresenterBrad Nelson
An improperly designed application and/or installation of a method of backflow prevention could have grave consequences and create serious liabilities. This presentation will address critical hydraulic principles that must be considered in both design and retrofit applications.
Session 9Backflow Dangers Head To Toe
AbstractPresenterTBA
It seems like every time we turn around there is some type of equipment connected to the drinking water system that we have never encountered before. This presentation will discuss
several common types of equipment and the cross-connection concerns associated with that equipment.
Session 10Changes with theUSC 10th Edition Field Test Procedures Abstract Presenter Henry Chang
The American Backflow Prevention Association has adopted the USC 10th Edition Backflow assembly test procedures for their backflow assembly tester certification program. Utah utilizes the ABPA certification program for the Utah backflow assembly tester certification program. The changes associated with the 10th Edition field test procedures and the implementation time table will be discussed during this presentation.
Session 11Secondary Irrigation Systems - Determining Adequate Methods of Protection and
Installation Criteria.
AbstractPresenterMike Brune
The question of what is required to protect the drinking water system from a secondary irrigation connection is frequently asked by engineers, architects, inspectors, plumbers, water purveyors as well as water users. They also ask about how to correctly install the chosen method of backflow protection. Attend this session to have these questions answered.
Session 12What Cross-ConnectionIssues Should You Look For While Conducting A Plumbing Inspection?
AbstractPresenterTBA
Even the most experienced inspectors have questions regarding what cross-connection issues they should be looking for while conducting a plumbing inspection. Those who conduct inspections will find this presentation informative. Some of the common questions and issues will be discussed.
Session 13Utah Backflow Certification - What is the Difference Between Class I, Class II
and Class III?
AbstractPresenterTBA
There are three different classifications of backflow certification associated with the Utah Backflow Certification program. This presentation will explain the both the similarities and differences between the different classes and how they fit into the Utah Backflow Technician Certification Program.
Session 14Thermal Expansion - Should You Be Concerned?
AbstractPresenterNathan Lunstad
What is thermal expansion? What are the Dangers? How does it happen? How do I prevent or control thermal expansion? What are my liabilities? Everyone should be concerned about these questions. These questions will be answered for those who attend this session.
Session 15 Developing Effective Partnerships for Emergency Response
AbstractPresenterRWAU Staff
Often more that one agency responds to an emergency. It very advantageous for the different agencies to develop effective partnerships prior to coming together during a time of crisis. This presentation will discuss the need to form partnerships and how to accomplish this task.
Session 16Code Updates
AbstractPresenterMichael Moss
Those involved in the various disciplines of cross-connection control and backflow prevention deal with numerous codes and regulations. This presentation will provide information regarding the various codes and the updates we need to be aware of. Attendees will also be made aware of ABPA’s participation with the National Code Bodies and their code amendment processes.
