USMA Class of 1961

45th Reunion Skeet & Trap Shoot

Thursday, September 28, 2006

“Back by popular demand” … we are once again going to host an “Early Bird” Skeet & Trap Shoot for those who wish to start off the first day of our 45th Class Reunion with a bang. An early start on Thursday morning from the Westchester Marriott Reunion Headquarters is necessary.

The event, as at the 40th Reunion, is open to absolutely everyone ... regardless of prior shotgun shooting experience ... and will be held at the Cadet Skeet & Trap Range, about 40 minutes from the Westchester Marriott.

There will be two shooting sessions – A and B – enabling anyone in the NYC-West Point area on the 28th to participate. Casual interested “observers” are also welcome … and invited to attend the activity as spectators. Observers can then opt to shoot, if they wish, after receiving a mandatory gun handling and safety briefing from a qualified shooting instructor.

We are indeed privileged that the Coach of the West Point Skeet & Trap Team, Dr. Joe Scancarello, his assistant coaches, and Cadet Team Officer-In-Charge, Major Sam Cubberly ... all experts in the field of competitive shotgun sports ... have each offered to assist our Class and provide shooting instruction to participants, both men and women, throughout the morning (A) and afternoon (B) sessions. In addition, other qualified instructors will be available, in order to encourage maximum participation and to ensure a safe, successful, and enjoyable day of shooting for all attendees.

The event, as at our 40th in 2001, is guaranteed to be an enjoyable affair for all participants. Instruction will be offered, if anyone cares to take advantage of it ... at whatever level he or she may shoot. Or participants may simply come and shoot the course(s), as organized. Beginning instruction for the “very first time” shooter ... or tips to the advanced skeet and trap enthusiast will be readily available. This event is intended to be a “fun” experience for the person who has never participated in shotgun sports before ... or for those who compete regularly.

Associated costs for the affair will be as follows:

  • $15 per shooting round (25-shots) … of skeet, trap, “fun game,” or instructional shooting.

This cost includes shotgun shells, clay targets … and the use of a shotgun, earplugs, and safety eyeglasses while shooting. Experienced shooters may wish to bring their own shooting vest and shooting glasses.

  • $15-$20 per person for lunch and beverages, depending upon attendance numbers.

This year will offer a special treat, as the “Dr. Joe Scancarello” Cadet Skeet & Trap Team Field House is now available for our use. This new structure is very nicely done, and offers amenities not previously available to Cadets, their competitors, and the Class of ’61 during our 40th Reunion Shoot. Added to the Range #10 “landscape” since our 40th … it is alone worth seeing for those who merely wish to acquaint themselves with “things new” at West Point in the Buckner training areas.

  • Transportation costs to Range #10 will be borne by individual participants.

All participants will meet at, and depart from, the front entry of the Westchester Marriott at 0815 on Thursday. Transportation to and from the Cadet Skeet & Trap Range will be by individual or car-pooled POVs. Strip maps to Cadet Range #10 will be provided.

No “up-front” advance payment is required to register. All shooting, lunch, and beverage costs will be paid at the event venue, as outlined above. Payment is by cash, personal, or Traveler’s check – no credit or debit cards will be accepted.

Lunch will be served only to those who register their luncheon commitment NLT Monday, September 25th. Participants need not indicate in advance how many rounds they will shoot. There is no minimum required; nor maximum permitted.

This program not only provides a great learning experience for all Cadet participants ... but also develops tremendous Institutional goodwill, as team members and coaches meet the American public on a “one-to-one” basis almost every week of the Cadet academic year.
