Using WS_FTP to Transfer Files Between ECU Servers and Your Personal Computer

WS_FTP is no longer free, and Microsoft Internet Explorer handles FTP tasks just fine, but ITCS advises against using it. I have an old copy of WS_FTP that I still used, for free. Here are the instructions for using WS_FTP LE, that free version that I use.

Connecting to the Core Server

·  After installing WS_FTP, boot it up. You need to create a new WS_FTP profile to connect to the core server. Click "New" and then enter in the "Profile Name" field a name for the profile, such as "PSYC."

·  For the Host Name, enter"core.ecu.edu"

·  For the Host Type, select"Microsoft NT"

·  Your userid is the same as that you use for your ECU email.

·  Your password is the same you used for your ECU email. I recommend not entering it at this point – just leave this blank, and you will be prompted for it each time you connect to the core server.

·  Ignore the Account field.

·  Click OK and the new profile is saved.

You should change a few default parameters in the CORE profile:

·  Click the "ChgDir" button in the "Local System" area on the left. The local system is your PC. When prompted, tell it the PC directory you want it to use. I use a directory on my D drive named Core, so I entered "D:\Core". Alternatively, you can locate the directory by clicking your way around the directory structure. After you have indicated the PC directory, you need to identify the directory to use on the core server. Navigate your way to the appropriate folder and then click on it. For me core1/docs/psyc/wuenschk.

·  Click "Options" on the bottom bar. In the "Session" folder, click"Save Current Directories as Connection Directories" and then click OK. You have now defined the default directories for the dealing with the core server.

So, now you are ready to transfer a file. Files in your PC directory are shown on the left side, and files in your space on the core server are shown in the listing on the right side. To transfer a file from your PC to the server, just find it on the left, highlight it, and then click the arrow that points to the right. To transfer from server to PC, just find the target on the right, highlight it, and then click the arrow that points to the left. Zap, the file is transferred. You can use the DELETE button to delete files on PC or server.

The next time you want to use WS_FTP, all the defaults set above will already be in place. All you will need to do is boot up WS_FTP and select the CORE profile.

Connecting to the ECUWWW Server

Follow the instructions above but point to ftp.www.ecu.edu.
