Using Technology to Differentiate Instruction
Lesson Plan Outline

1. Lesson Title: Using Power Point to review and drill high frequency words to assist in sight word acquisition

2. Lesson Author(s): Scott Moyer

3. Subject Area(s): Reading

4. Grade Level: 2nd grade

5. Approximate Time Needed: 10 to 15 minutes (depending on student and amount of words)

6. PA Content Standard(s): Standard 1.1 Learning to read independently,

sub categories C and E.

7. Objectives/Lesson Outcomes: The students will increase their automaticity of high frequency sight words to help them become better readers by identifying and correctly using words

8. Materials and Resources Required:

A. Technology: computer, microphone, headphones,

B. Printed Materials: high frequency word list to mark off known or unkown words

C. Other Supplies: words on index cards to practice at home, printout of

unknown words

9. LessonProcedures:

Students are first pre tested on the high frequency word list for each second grade unit. Unknown words are recorded. All words are put on Power Point with recorded voice for students to practice.

Students can say the word and then click on the speaker icon to hear the correct pronunciation of a word.If the word is a homophone, the word is used in a sentence, so that the correct spelling and meaning of a word is known. Students can possibly record their own voice for word with teacher assistance and to ensure accuracy of pronunciation.

Have students use power point program (in student share folder) with their vocabulary words daily or several times per week, doing each word. Briefly instruct them on how to click the mouse or press key to make word/slide change. Listen and watch students one time per week to assess progress. Mark percent of known words and use the units that continue to need practice.

10. Modifications for Differentiated Instruction:

A. Remediation: The lesson is meant as remediation for students to build their vocabulary. Power point presentations can be altered to accommodate student needs, so that a student can practice a limited number of words.

B. Enrichment: Students can be taught to record their own voice, or have other students who already know the vocabulary, record words.

11. Student Assessment: Students will be monitored on the computer to assess correct identification and pronunciation of word. Students will also be assessed with high frequency word check list.
