How to Drug Proof Your Kids – Parent Programme

Just the mention of the word drugs can strike fear into the hearts of many parents. Mums and dads often believe their children know more about the issue than they do! They worry that there is nothing they can do to influence the choices their children make when it comes to drugs, alcohol and tobacco

Glasgow Council on Alcohol Prevention and Education are a community based service tackling alcohol & drug misuse in our community and work in close partnership with Springburn Academy on these issues providing educational inputs to both pupils and parents.

In the coming new term we would like to invite concerned parents to join the parent programme which will run for 6 weeks with a one hour weekly input delivered in the school. This parenting programme is not merely a neatly packaged set of answers, nor does it naively tell young people to just say “no”. This programme does concentrate on the important role a parent or significant caregiver can play in reducing the risk of harmful drug use. It also equips parents to establish protective boundaries that will assist their children to make good choices.

For further information or to register your interest in joining this free programme, please contact

MOBILE PHONES

As you are aware mobile phones have been banned from some schools. I do not intend to ban them from Springburn Academy as parents appreciate the safety aspect of the phone.

However in order for us as a school community to function well I need your co-operation. Mobile phones should be switched off during class times – if a parent needs an urgent message to go to their son/daughter then the school should be contacted in the normal way.

Phones will be confiscated by Staff if used during the class time and given to the Head Teacher. She will return them to the pupil at the end of the school day – obviously parents/pupils can make contact at interval and lunch times.

I appreciate your full co-operation and thanks.

Mrs Ervine
