Use this template to create your LDRD project proposal, and to provide an explanation of your budget, if necessary.

Use the Proposal Cost Template to track your budget by fiscal year.

Do NOT include the budget in the Word file. For example, do NOT embed the budget as an Excel file or image in the proposal.

Formatting guidelines: Times New Roman, 12pt or greater, single-spaced, 1” margins

Naming Convention

Name yourproposal file name following the convention:Leadlastname_projectname_LDRD_FYYear.

File format

Please submit your proposal as an MS Word file.

Page Limits

The proposal must not exceed 5 pages (Sections II-V ONLY).

References cited: no page limit

Biographical Sketch: 2-page limit

Page limits within Section II are suggested; 5-page limit for Sections II-V is mandatory.

Initial Review

Please submit a preliminary proposal for review by your ALD. Upon concurrence, please upload to the LDRD website by the deadline indicated.

I. Executive Summary

Provide an executive summary of yourLDRD project (max. 300 words). Please outline the goals, anticipated outcomes, and experimental or theoretical methods to be applied. Briefly highlighta) the impact of this work for the field and b) its alignmentwith the mission of the SLAC LDRD program. The writing style of the executive summary should be aimed for communication to a scientific/technical,non-specialist audience.

II. Project Description

  1. INTRODUCTION (1 page)

Provide a basic introduction/background on your topic, including the current-state-of the art in the scientific or technological area you are addressing. State your motivating rationale and the overall impact this work aims to achieve by addressing for example areas that are lacking in scientific understanding or technological developments necessary. Please note that the reviewers have a range of expertise that may not be specific to your technology or scientific problem.

  1. OBJECTIVES (0.5 page)

Please describe the objectives of your project, explaining how outcomes of the project will advance the current-state-of the art.Compare your proposed work with other research being performed elsewhere, indicating major breakthroughs expected from your project.

  1. APPROACH/METHOD (1.5 pages)

Please describe your approach, methods, and activities providing enough information for the review panel to assess the feasibility of your proposed objectives. Limitations, risks and mitigation approaches should be identified. Where applicable, please provide examples of prior work that you have performed that is relevant to your proposed LDRD project. The role of collaborations with other institutions (e.g. other universities, industry, etc.) could be included here.

  1. ANTICIPATED RESULTS/ DELIVERABLES (0.5 page)

Please explain your anticipated results andspecific deliverables that will result within thetimeline of the project. It is recommended that you present milestones achievable in 6-month intervals from the start of the project, which will lead to your suggested deliverables at the end of the project. Simulations or references in support of your anticipated results/deliverables should be included here.

III. Strategic Alignment

Please address the alignment of the proposed project with

  1. The SLAC Strategic Plan
  2. The LDRD program mission

The LDRD program seeks investment in ideas with potential to become long-term projects, seeding new growth directions for the Lab. What is the long-term vision for this project beyond the LDRD period? (For example, describe a 5yr roadmap from the start of the project and state any other longer-term goals that you envision.)

IV. Management Plan

(0.5 page)

Please detail the roles, responsibilities and expertise of the personnel involved in the LDRD project. State other resources necessary to complete project successfully.

Will the project be sustainable and how after the LDRD funding period? Please identify funding agencies or programs that will support the project beyond its LDRD funding period.(We highly recommend the Pivot funding opportunity website )

V. Budget Explanation

Use this section to explain your budget, if necessary.

Use the Proposal Cost Templateto track your budget by fiscal year. Budget guidance is included in the Proposal Cost Template. Burden & Indirect Rates will be adjusted for the Fiscal Year rates when available.

Break down the funding by fiscal year by the broad categories of labor, materials and supplies, travel (foreign & domestic), services and subcontracts.

LDRD funds cannot be used to:

  • Substitute for or increase funding for any tasks for which Congress or the DOE has established a specific limitation, or for any specific tasks that are funded by DOE or collaborators.
  • Fund projects that will require the addition of non-LDRD funds to accomplish the technical goals of the LDRD project.
  • Fund general purpose capital expenditures with the exception of acquisition of general purpose equipment that is clearly required for the project and is not otherwise readily available from laboratory inventory.
