POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Director of Athletics

Reports To: High School Principal

Date: January 2017

SUMMARY

The Athletic Director is responsible for providing administrative leadership, in planning, implementation, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of the interscholastic athletic programs for the middle and high schools (grades 7-12). Promotes extracurricular athletic activities that foster skill development, understanding of sports, and appreciation for a variety of athletic activities and programs, teaming, and sportsmanship for students and adults.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the High School Principal:

§  Coordinates the 7-12 athletic program in collaboration with principals, assistant athletic directors, middle school athletic coordinator(s), and coaches to ascertain programmatic needs on an annual basis, as well as prior to each season to insure consistency of program.

§  Initiates the recruitment and selection of coaches and makes employment recommendations to the building principals.

§  Supervises and evaluates all coaches at the middle and high school levels.

§  Schedules all middle and high school athletic contests, issues contracts for the contest, and maintains the proper and necessary records.

§  Ensures officials are scheduled and contracts are issued for all middle and high school contests. Maintains an active file of officials under contract and pays officials following the contract.

§  Arranges transportation for all away middle and high school contests.

§  Supervises the preparation and verifies all athletic eligibility lists.

§  Supervises middle and high school athletic contests and acts as the host to officials and visiting schools. Oversees the supervision of contest employees and volunteers who work the athletic contest. Arranges for personnel to supervise contests as needed.

§  Supervises athletic funds, prepares and administers a detailed operating budget for the athletic program and submits it to the building principals. Orders all equipment and maintains a current inventory of all athletic equipment.

§  Advises and ensures all coaches conform with Board, WPIAL, PIAA, league policies and regulations and with state and federal laws. Attends league and district meetings. Ensures all coaches have successfully completed required training programs.

§  Supervises and is responsible of preparation for home contests.

§  Provides leadership for and serves as liaison to middle and high school athletic booster groups and coordinates with the coaches the support groups for specific athletic programs.

§  Works with the contracted athletic trainer to address injuries and to educate students, parents, and coaches on proper training protocols to minimize injuries.

§  Provides oversight of athletic facilities scheduling and utilization.

§  Other duties as assigned by the High School Principal.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

·  Supervising the assistant athletic directors, middle school athletic coordinator(s), head coaches, secretary and athletic trainer.

·  Directing, coordinating, and evaluating of this unit.

·  Carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district’s policies and applicable laws.

·  Interviewing and training employees.

·  Planning, assigning, and directing work.

·  Appraising performance.

·  Initiating disciplinary process.

·  Addressing complaints.

·  Financial oversight.

·  Resolving problems.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelors' Degree and athletic administrative experience is required, preferably in a school district. A minimum of five years of teaching/coaching experience; the ability to develop, organize and implement programs; knowledge and skills required to supervise personnel; legal and financial aspects of the position; and strong communications and technology skills.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Pennsylvania driver's license, CPR, AED and first aid certificates.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, PIAA regulations, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before administrators, staff, parents and students.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to perform calculations, conduct financial analysis and prepare and monitor budgets and cash management.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district, WPIAL and PIAA requirements and policies. Ability to use a personal computer with Word, Excel and database programs.
