EDU 6 Update: November 16, 2011

Update of course in ECD – in progress. Said Pazirandeh requested that I submit the update by January 31, 2012.

Task Force members have researched other EDU 6 courses in the district copies of those course outlines.

Contacted District Learning Center Directors for input: Discussed whether the tutor training should be an EDU course since Mission does not have an Education Department. It was suggested that the course be moved to Learning Skills.

Contacted Chair of Child Development: Contacted Lil De Silva to request input, comments, and suggested she review the final update of EDU 6 since the course is currently housed in the Child Development Department.

Textbook and Materials review – in process. Also requesting funding from SFP for training videos for the LRC.

Total Hours review: in progress

Should the class be changed to 3 units or modularized?

The Carnegie Rule and Title 5, section 55002 sets forth the following minimum standards: 1 unit = 1 hour lecture per week, 2 hours homework per week; OR 2 hours per week of lab with homework; OR 3 hours of lab per week without homework. The hours per week are based on a standard 18-week calendar. Lecture also includes discussion and/or demonstration hours, laboratory includes activity and/or studio hours. Additionally, Title 5, section 55002.5 states that: The amount of credit awarded shall be adjusted in proportion to the number of hours of lecture, study or laboratory work in half unit increments. Thus as the hours of lecture and lab increase, the number of units must increase as well.
Homework Hrs For Term: 36

Other Considerations and Discussions:

  1. Increasing the number of units from 1 to 3 requires district approval. Said suggested other options: modularizing the course as EDU 6 A, B, and C, each being one unit. Said will discuss the logistics of this type of change during his district meeting in November. (Discussion with Said)
  2. A review of which department should house this course, and therefore all EDU courses, should be initiated with Alma and at the district level. Should the course be housed in the Learning Skills Department? Said will initiate a discussion with Alma, the chairs of departments at Pierce and Valley that house their EDU 6 courses, and with the district curriculum committee members. (Discussion with Said)
  3. A discussion should be initiated with Learning Center Directors at the district level regarding whether EDU 6 should be revised from a 1 unit course to a 3 unit course. (Discussion with Said)
  4. Another option would be to revise EDU 6 to be cross listed with Learning Skills. (Discussion with Said, LC Directors)
