Santiago Peak 2.4 GHz Update

This is from what I have seen and heard on the repeater:

Late lastSaturday afternoon Mike, WA6SVT went to

Santiago to service the repeater.

He found that the 2.4 GHz input problem seems to be

in the transmission line at the top of the tower some where

between the hard-line/preamp/jumper to the antenna.

It was announced that there is a connector that has corroded

because of water migration over the past 15 years and

needs to be replaced.

It seems that it will require two workers on the tower and

one person on the ground to accomplish the job so it

will take some time to coordinate the personal for a

"Tower Party" to make the necessary repairs.

About two or three years ago a new 2.4 GHz antenna

was purchased for Santiago to replace the old one

which was falling apart from the years and weather.

The new antennawas a special antenna with down-tilt

that was expected to improve the 2.4 GHz input.

When it was installed I didn't see anything that would

be considered an improvement. In fact that is when I

noticed that Don's (KE6BXT) signal go weak and just

in the last few months he brought his picture back to

a P5.

The one good thing that might come out of the final

breakdown of the 2.4 GHz input is that we may see

a dramatic improvement of the 2.4 GHz input when the

repairs are made.

While Mike was at the repeater he also installed a new

5 GHz transmitter. But the new transmitter had a problem

with transmitting audio. And was explained by one of

the control operators that he, "Jury Rigged", the audio

from the old transmitter for the time being. Mike had problems

with this new transmitter when he first installed it back in March

of 2009 and pulled it back out and put the old one back

in operation.

Also Mike had someone turn there antenna toward the Snow

Peak repeater and key-up the 2.4 GHz input. Snow Peak

has had a problem with it's audio being received on Santiago

Peak. The problem was still there and worse than ever but

the picture wasn't bad at all.

On Thursday Mike went to the Santiago Peak repeater again

with Don, KE6BXT and another person. I am not sure but I think

his call was W6TBS or W6TBX. Mike was the only one to

climb the tower and the other two were his ground crew.

Mike made the repairs to the transmission lineand restored

the 2.4 GHz input at 2:40 PM.

I watched Mike do his thing on the tower via the "Tower Cam"

as well as on the web site. The web

site covers many of the mountain tops so you might want to

check it out.

After Mike was finished and left the repeater site one of the

ATVers on Santiago was tuning up his transmitter and

commented that his picture was much darker than before

the problem accrued.

I noticed that thepicture from the San Bernardino Microwave

Society Meetinglater thatevening and it was very dark. And later

AC6RB, George came on and his picture was much darker.

And around 10:15 PMI saw Don, KE6BXTagain but this time

from his QTH station, and hesaid that his picture was very dark

on his receive and asked a control operator for a signal report.

Thecontrol operatorreportedhe was very dark but Mike had told

him that he needs to adjusthis video deviation to improve his signal

so Don might have to do the same. I heard Mike talking

later and he told the control operator that he needs the

adjust the video deviation on his camera and the "darkness"

on Santiago isn't from the work he did on the 2.4 GHz receive.

I sure hope that everyone doesn't have to adjust their cameras.

Amiga May Go Away

I overheard Mike talking about getting rid of the old "Amiga"

computer on the Santiago Peak repeater that is used to

display screens for the I.D.s.

The computer is very old andMike is considering one of the

photo units that are usedfor slide shows to display pictures

you take with your digital cameras to replace the "Amiga".
