Upcoming Workshop - Active Kids and Teachers in Schools: Become a Change Agent to Today’s Kids

On Friday, February 16, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Education Service Center Region 2 (ESC-2) is hosting a workshop featuring a guest presenter, Dr. Deborah Rhea. Dr. Rhea is a Texas Christian University professor, Associate Dean of Research in Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the founder of the LiiNK Project. The workshop will teach participants to develop:

·  the whole child through physical education, unstructured play, and social emotional learning and

·  strategies to become change agents for their school.

Space is limited! Registration is free for school professionals within the ESC-2 region. For school professionals that are out-of-region, please be aware that a fee may be required. For more information, please visit ESC-2’s workshop registration page.

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

Did you know that 1 in 3 teens experience some form of dating abuse before the age of 18? For ideas to protect Texas teens, visit the DSHS’ Maternal & Child Health Adolescent Health Program. During February, learn the warning signs of teen dating violence and how to get help. Make a game plan for your community!

TAHK Annual Summit—February 9, 2018

This is a final reminder of the Texas Action for Healthy Kids (TAHK) Annual Summit in Houston. Session topics include state and national grants, health equity in schools, and wellness policies/School Health Advisory Councils (SHACs).

Funding Opportunities

School Grants for Healthy Kids—Open: February 5, 2018

The Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) offers three types of grants. The School Breakfast Grants expand access to school breakfast; the Game On Grants support fitness and nutrition; and the Parents for Healthy Kids Grants engage parents in improving health at school and home. The online school portal opens on Monday and accepts applications through April 6, 2018.

Gender Diversity Webinar—February 2, 2018

At 1:00 p.m. CST, the School-Based Health Alliance will host Making Room for Gender Diversity in School Health Services and Sex Education. Presenters will share relevant research, inclusive approaches, and affirming practices that may be used when teaching or discussing puberty and reproductive health with students.

American Heart Month

Encourage students to make heart health a priority by teaching them fascinating facts about the most powerful muscle in the human body. The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America offers resources to help. Its interactive Cardio Quiz Calendar asks students to respond to questions with movement.

Nutrition Environment & Services

Webinar: Community Eligibility Provision 101—February 7, 2018

At 1:00-2:15 p.m. CST, the School Nutrition Association will present this webinar, which is Part 1 in the Community Eligibility (CE) series. Attendees will learn about the benefits of CE and important dates for implementation of the option.

USDA Food Buying Guide Mobile App

Last week the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the release of its first mobile application, making it easier for food service professionals to provide wholesome, tasty meals through the USDA’s child nutrition programs. The interactive Food Buying Guide Mobile App is also available to the public.

Educational Activity for Nurses

The recorded webinar series, Domestic and Sexual Violence (DV/SV, The Impact on Health, and the Patient Safety Card Approach to Integrated Education, Assessment, and Response, consists of three sessions, each followed by a quiz and evaluation. Three nursing continuing education hours may be awarded free of charge.

Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) Toolkit

Researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health developed theASQ Toolkit. This free resource includes a set of four screening questions that can help nurses successfully identify youth (ages 10-24) at risk for suicide. The toolkit is organized by medical setting and includes materials that may be used with youth in school nursing offices. Available in multiple languages, it also provides tools for the management of youth found to be at risk for suicide.

Community Involvement

The Role of Family, School and Community in Promoting Resiliency

This short overview provides research on gender variance andtransgender identities among children and adolescents, and points of intervention within families, schools, and communities. The University of Minnesota Extension’s Children, Youth & Family Consortium (CYFC) published this featured resource summary in December 2017.
