COURSE DESCRIPTION

Selective mutism (SM) occurs with children who do not speak in specific social situations despite speaking in other, more familiar, situations. This difficulty usually becomes apparent when children start school and do not speak. Children with SM usually speak well at home, but do not speak in school. Selective mutism occurs in almost 1% of the childhood population.

This workshop will describe the behaviors associated with SM, and summarize the current professional literature regarding explanations for its cause and recommendations for its treatment. The workshop will use a model of integrated treatment, in which a child with SM receives therapy from a mental health practitioner, who coordinates intervention with school personnel and other therapists.

The general findings in the clinical literature will be translated into specific actions for day-to-day management of this disorder. It will emphasize practical techniques for reducing anxiety and expanding communication, starting with operant techniques and then introducing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with increasing age and self-awareness. Training will include therapy techniques for the mental health practitioner, as well as methods for teachers, speech-language pathologists, and related personnel to adapt intervention techniques for school and therapy settings. This workshop explains a variety of techniques that professionals successfully use with patients, and invites participant questions on how to tailor these techniques for children of all ages, from preschoolers through adolescents. Atypical presentations of selective mutism will be discussed.
