UON “How to” Guide for Web Publishers

  1. Make sure the Standard Page Asset you would like your Feature to appear on has a sidebar folder saved under it. A sidebar folder will allow Features, News and Events, Call-To-Actions etc to show up in the right-hand column of your page. If there is not a sidebar folder take a look at our instructions for creating a sidebar folder.

  1. A Feature widget pulls through information and images from a Standard Page asset and links the user through to that asset. Go to the Squiz Easy Edit area and select the New Asset Creation Wizard to set up a Standard Page asset with the information you would like to feature - with an associated image and completed metadata description.

  1. Enter a name for your page – this will be the title of your Feature widget.
  2. Flick the Show in Menu tab to No, unless you also want the page to show in your left-hand menu.
  3. Select the location as the Standard Page asset you would like your Feature widget to show on.
  4. Select Create, and then select Edit.

  1. Upload an image to show in your Feature widget.
  2. Resize your image to be 278px wide (it can be any height, however, for aesthetic reasons, approx 200px is recommended), you can do this using your choice of image software – for example: Photoshop or Microsoft Picture Manager. Images should also be no more than 50KB in size. Save it as a JPEG file.
  3. Create a new Image asset.
  1. Alt text will be used by a screen reader for visiually impaired users. If the image is not purely decorative, add a description. The caption does not need to be filled out. Select No to Show in Menu – and Select your feature’s Standard Page asset to save the image under. Then Create.

  1. Once your image is created, close it and navigate back to your feature’s Standard Page asset.
  2. In the Details tab under Related Image, select the Image Asset you have just created for your Feature. Select Save.

  1. Click on the Content tab at the top of your screen and add the content you would like users to click through to from the Feature widget. Select Save.
  1. Go to the Metadata tab at the top of your screen.
  2. Make sure the correct background image is selected for your page.

  1. Scroll to the Dublin Core section of your Metadata. The dcterms.description is the text that will pull through to the intro section in your feature widget – describe what the user is clicking through to.

Select Save. Your Standard Page asset is now completed. Now you need to pull the page information through to your Feature widget.

  1. Go to the New Asset Creation Wizard at the top left-hand corner of your screen, go to Other and select the Link asset.
  1. Enter a name – this does not show to the user, it is just for your housekeeping purposes.
  2. Select No to Show in Menu.

  3. Select the location of the sidebar folder saved under your page. Then Create.
  1. Once your Link asset is created, select Edit.
  2. In the Details tab of your Link asset, under Link Options, select the page you have just created to feature in your widget. Select Save.

  1. Select the Linking tab at the top of your screen. Add a Link Value of “feature”. Select Save. Your Feature is now finished.

Adding a feature widget to multiple pages

Instead of creating a new link for every page that we would like the same feature to appear, we can link the asset to a number of sidebar locations. Please note: Assets should not be linked to more than 10 locations as this can cause serious loading issues in Squiz. The less locations you link to the better.

  1. In the Easy Edit area of Squiz use the Asset Finder to navigate to the Feature Link asset you wish to place on multiple pages. Select it.

2) Go to the Linking tab at the top of your screen. Select New Location Link.

  1. Select the sidebar folder under any Standard Page asset you would like the Feature to appear on.

  1. Select No to Show in Menu and enter “feature” under the Link Value section. Select Save.
