PING PONG

Until 2001 a table tennis game was played up to 21 points. But in order to make the game more exciting, have more "crucial" points, and make it more appealing to television viewers, the rules of table tennis were changed. A game of table tennis is now played up to 11 points using rally score.

THE GAME:

11 points – Rally Score

Each server serves 2 points, then the serve goes to the opponents for the next 2 points and so on until the end of the game. If the score becomes tied at 10-10, each player only serves for 1 point in turn.

 21 points –Rally Score

Each server serves 5 points, then the serve goes to the opponents for the next 5 points and so on until the end of the game. If the score becomes tied at 20-20, each player only serves for 1 point in turn.

A GOOD SERVICE:

Ball restingfreely on open palm.

Toss the ball up, without imparting spin, so it rises 6”.

Server hits ball so that it touches his court first and then, after passing over the net, touches the receiver's court.

The ball must be hit from behind the server's end line.

A serve that hits your side, then touches the net and goes over is called a “let” and is replayed.

A GOOD RETURN:

The ball must be hit so that it passes over oraround the net and touches the opponent's court. If it hits the net and goes over, it is a GOOD return and play continues.

DOUBLES:

In doubles, Partners must then take turns hitting (returning) the ball.

When serving in doubles, the ball must touch the right half courtof the server’s court, then the right half court of the receiver’s.

In doubles, at each change of service the team that just finished serving switch places with each other (the player on the right switches to the left and the player on the left switches to the right).In this way,the partner of the previous server becomes the next receiver. “THE RECEIVER IS THE NEXT SERVER”.

SINGLES

In singles, the serve may hit anywhere on the server’s court, pass over the net, and hit anywhere on the receiver’s court.

A “LET”:

A let occurs when:

In serving, the ball hits the net and then goes over provided the service is otherwise good.

the serve is delivered when the receiving player or pair is not ready, provided that neither the receiver nor his partner attempts to strike the ball.

No points are scored with a let. The serve is replayed.

A POINT:

A player scores a point if:

opponent fails to make a good service;

opponent fails to make a good return;

his opponent returns the ball over the net but it doesn’t bounce on the his side of the table.

if his opponent moves the table;

if his opponent or opponent’s paddle touches the net.

if his opponent's free hand touches the table;

in doubles, his opponents hit the ball out of sequence.

SOME COMMON QUESTIONS:

Is the ball in or out if it hits the side of the table? IN

How many “lets” can you serve before you lose the point?

AS MANY AS YOU LIKE. You never lose a point for serving a let.

How many faults are you allowed to serve before you lose a point?

Every time you serve a fault you lose a point.

Can you hit the ball before it bounces on your side of the table?

If the ball is still in play (over the table) and you hit it before it bounces, you lose the point.

If the ball has gone past the end of the table without bouncing and then you hit it, you win the point. Either way, the point stops….play does not continue.

Also, if the ball has gone past the end of the table without bouncing and then hits you or any part of your body, you win the point.
