To the members of the Course Unsatisfactory Progress Committee,
I am writing to explain the circumstances which led me to fail three of my subjects last semester.
1. Describe the issues you encountered during the semester and how this affected your academic performance, for example:
I’m in first year and I have found university life very difficult. I am the first person in my family to go to the University of Melbourne. I come from Traralgon in regional Victoria and I haven’t made many friends this year. Studying here is different from studying during VCE. I had problems with the amount of extra reading that was required and I did not realise how much preparation I really needed for the exams.
2. Describe what strategies and solutions you are putting into place for successful study in future, for example:
Next semester I will choose different subjects (give details). These subjects are ones that I would be more interested in, since I want to be a zoologist. I will go to and see Academic Skills to improve my study habits, especially in preparing for exams. I will contact my tutors and lecturers when I run into problems. I also will be moving into college so I will make more friends and they have residential tutors who can help me.
3. What you would like the committee to do, for example:
I’d like the Committee to allow me to continue in the course with a reduced study load of three subjects, which will enable to me to get my confidence back with my studies and implement the study strategies from Academic Skills.
