A RESOLUTION honoring the Warren Central High School Dragons, 2004 KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Basketball Champions.

WHEREAS, on the evening of March 20, 2004, in front of over 22,000 fans in Lexington's Rupp Arena, the Warren Central Dragons capped a magical season by defeating the Mason County Royals 66-56 to earn the school's first KHSAA Boys Sweet Sixteen Basketball Championship; and

WHEREAS, Warren Central's championship marked the first time in history that a school from Warren County had won the coveted title and the first time a school from the Fourth Region had accomplished the feat since 1984; and

WHEREAS, the Dragons' attitude and resiliency were severely tested early in the season, when after some difficult losses in holiday tournaments, the team's record stood at 5 wins and 6 losses; and

WHEREAS, the new year brought a stunning change in the Dragons' fortunes, as they proceeded to win 24 of their last 25 games, including their last 21 in a row; and

WHEREAS, in amassing a final record of 29 wins against 7 losses, the Dragons dominated opponents, outscoring them by an average of over 20 points per game; and

WHEREAS, Warren Central's dominance remained in force during tournament play, where they beat eight of nine district, regional, and state tournament opponents by at least ten points; and

WHEREAS, Warren Central was a true team, with five players averaging in double figures; and

WHEREAS, Warren Central was led by senior starters Ryan Anderson, Lonell DeWalt, Matt Maresca, and Brock Whitney, who was named tournament MVP, and by fifth starter Troy McFarland; and

WHEREAS, all four of Warren Central's senior starters were named to the all-tournament team; and

WHEREAS, Warren Central received solid contributions throughout the season from reserves Quinton Curry, Chase Goff, Jeremy Anderson, Nick Britt, Joe Hood, T.J. Woodard, P.J. Smith, Avery Driver, and Monet Hudson; and

WHEREAS, Warren Central was led to their triumph by head coach Tim Riley, who was ably assisted by Craig Anderson, Tim Arnold, Austin Jones, and Casey Simpson; and

WHEREAS, the talent, perseverance, and dedication of the Warren Central High School Dragons have thrilled basketball fans not only in Warren County, but throughout the Commonwealth, and the results of their efforts will be written indelibly in the annals of basketball history in the Bluegrass State;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The members of this body, both individually and collectively, do offer their heartiest congratulations to the Warren Central High School Dragons boys basketball team, head coach Tim Riley and his staff, and Principal Kathy Goff on winning the 2004 Sweet Sixteen Boys Basketball Tournament, and wish the school, coaches, and players continued success in future endeavors.
