A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of William Bryant Shearer.
WHEREAS, William Bryant Shearer was born on July 16, 1976, in Somerset, Kentucky, to Joe Martin and Linda Carol New Shearer, and departed this earthly life on March 16, 2006, at the young age of 29; and
WHEREAS, having a great passion for sports, William was an outstanding athlete as a youngster, and played basketball at Wayne County High School, setting the state record for steals that has never been broken, and he once held the state record for assists. He played on the 1994 and 1995 Wayne County basketball teams that went to back-to-back state tournaments. As an adult, William influenced many young Cardinals, coaching 7th and 8th grade basketball and working as an assistant coach for the varsity team. He also started the girls volleyball program at Wayne County in 2002, and led his team through three outstanding seasons, beginning another tradition of success for Wayne County. Active in church activities, he was a member of the Lake Cumberland Emmaus Community Church, teaching Sunday School and participating in mission trips, and was a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and
WHEREAS, William Bryant Shearer is survived by his parents; his maternal grandmother, Alma New; a sister, Allison Heatherly; a brother, Jeffery Shearer; two nephews, Trevor and Nicholas Shearer; aunts and uncles, Susan and Menville Dishman, Danny and Betty Shearer, Mary Eva Shearer, and Mike Shearer; and cousins, Blaine and Bryan Shearer, Sarah Bertram, J.B. Powell, and Jason Dishman; and a host of friends throughout the Monticello community who share in his loss. We are reminded of these words from A. E. Houseman, in "To An Athlete Dying Young": "To-day, the road all runners come /Shoulder-high we bring you home /And set you at your threshold down/Townsman of a stiller town";
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives expresses its deep sense of sadness at the untimely passing of this outstanding young man, and extends to the family and friends of William Bryant Shearer its sincere condolences.
Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of William Bryant Shearer.
Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shearer, 160 Harper Drive, Monticello, Kentucky 42633-2036.
