Welcome the returning participants back and have any new participants introduce themselves and tell the group how many children they have and their ages (Please have all new participants fill out the Child Language Development Survey-Pre)
Direct participants to the Community Resource table.
Trainer Note: Inform participants there will be new resource material at every workshop in the series.
This workshop is twofold. The first part focuses on healthy eating habits and exercise. Part two encourages the use of poetry, music and stories to introduce children to the beauty and rhythm of language.
Direct attention to the agenda poster. Review and present the specific outcomes/expectations and agenda for this session.Let participants know that there are two sections to this workshop: Healthy Eating and Exercise and Poetry, Music and Stories.
Have returning participants share the results of their take home activity from the previous workshop Create Your Own Print Rich Environment. Ask if they posted their labels / Agenda Poster

10 min / Rainbow Healthy Foods / Food for Thought Clip. Play first few minutes of the clip
Pass out post –its. Ask participants to write down the fruits and vegetables they had in the last 24 hrs. Have color of fruits and vegetables correlate to the color of the post-its.
Create chart with columns of post it colors.

Group the post-it notes on the chart under the appropriate color. Add others to fill out the columns. Encourage parents to talk to kids about various colors on their plates at home. / Trainer Web Page

min / Between the Lions Presents Talking, Singing, Rhyming - Activities for Families with Children Ages 3 to 5 /
  1. Hang literacy tip posters (pg. 1) around the room. Provide each participant with 6 sticker dots. Ask participants to put a dot on each tip that they currently do. Note which tips has the most dots/stickers and which has the least.
Note: You may find that many participants are not using poetry to a great extent to encourage language development. Emphasize that poetry and rhyming help children to pay attention to sounds, reinforces concepts of words and tunes the ears to differences, similarities and patterns
  1. Ask participants to take turns reading the tips on pg. 2, Finding Time To Talk
3. Review the Family Album Activity on pg. 3. This activity can be completed at home using family photos or drawing pictures with your child(ren)
Note: One family memory that children enjoy hearing about is the day they were born. Who was there to love them from the beginning? (parent, grandparents, siblings, family pets) What was the weather like? Was there anything funny or exciting that happened - like getting to the hospital too early or maybe just in the nick of time? Did you have their name already picked out? Why did you choose their name?

In the “Language Through Music” handout an aunt writes “Dear Debi” asking if she should include more music and songs at home to enhance her nephew’s language development.
Review the many benefits of using music and songs with young children.
  • Instills positive feelings, teaches rhythm, rhyming, other languages, helps children with speech delays, helps differentiate between soft, loud, high and low notes, helps express feelings, teaches vocabulary, learn facts like numbers, letters, states, etc.

min / Make and Take Activity / Set up four stations with the following activities. Review each station. Allow participants to work at the stations of their choice.
Station 1: Picture Poems. Each participant is asked to write a nursery rhyme or poem on paper. Leave blank spaces to draw or glue pictures of missing words. Let them know that they have the option to use the included poems or create their own unique poem!
Station 2: Lacing Activity with Letters/Words. Each participant is asked to punch holes in the cardstock. Where each hole is placed, a letter or word is written, depending on the child’s ability. Attach the lace at the corner hole. The child says each individual sound or word as he sews through each hole
Station 3: Music with Recyclable Items. Each participant will make an instrument using the plastics eggs, rice and beans provided

Next Workshop / Create Your Own Rhymes. Encourage participants to practice and create unique rhymes of their own with their child(ren)
MUST be completed by each participant and then collected.
Hand out the Workshop 4 DVD to each participant in either English or Spanish (only one per participant). Encourage them to watch the video. It contains much more information not covered in the workshop.
Remind participants how important it is to read to your child(ren) every day.Repetition is good, so read the book with your child. Be dramatic and ask questions!
