Whenyoudeclaredsocialworkasamajor,youwereclassifiedasaTrackingMajor.The Divisionadoptedthisproceduretogiveyouanopportunitytomakeaninformedandpositive choiceof socialworkasanacademicmajorandasaprofession.Nowitistimeforyouto seriouslyreflectonyourchoiceanddecideifyouwishtocontinueasasocialworkmajor.Both scholarlyandpersonalattributesareveryimportanttoa careerinsocialwork,andgivenyour introductorycourseworkandtimeasaTrackingMajor,youshouldbeinapositiontoassess bothyourlongterminterestandsuitabilityforsucha career.

Ifyoudecidetocontinueasasocialworkmajor,pleasecompletetheattachedapplicationfor AdmittedMajorStatusandsubmitit forreviewbytheBSWCommittee.Youmustbeaccepted intoAdmittedMajorstatustotaketheprofessionalsocialworkcoursesintheFall.Admissionis competitive.

FollowingtheBSWCommittee’sreview,anemailwillnotifyyouwhetherornotyouhavebeen selectedforAdmittedMajorstatus.Selectedapplicantswillbeprovisionallyadmitted.After finalgradeshavebeenpostedfortheSpring2017semester,gradesandGPAwillbereviewed andqualifiedapplicantswillbefullyacceptedintoAdmittedMajorstatus.Formoreinformation onthisprocess,pleaseconsulttheSocialWorkStudentHandbook.

StudentsmustmeetthefollowingcriteriatobeacceptedintoAdmittedMajorstatus.

  1. Must be a student at the University of Wyoming (UW). If the student is not currently a student at UW she must apply for admission to UW through UW Admissions and submit her Admitted Major application to the Division of Social Work concurrently. Students must be accepted at the University of Wyoming before being accepted into Admitted Major status.
  1. Studentsmustearnaminimumgradepointaverage(GPA)of2.50inallUWcourse work,aswellasall courseworkcompletedatotheracademicinstitutions.Thestudent’s GPAiscalculatedusingall collegeanduniversitycreditcountedtowardgraduationfrom theUniversityofWyoming.

2. StudentsmustearnagradeofCorhigherin a HumanBiologycourse,STAT2050/2070,GeneralPsychology(PSYC1000),MacroEconomics(ECON1010), SociologicalPrinciples(SOC1000),AmericanGovernment(POLS1000),and IntroductiontoSocialWork(SOWK2000) or their equivalents.

3. StudentsmustagreetoadheretotheNASWCodeof Ethics.

4. Studentscannotexhibitbehaviorthatwillinfringeon thestudent’spresentorfuture abilitytofulfillresponsibilitiesasasocialworkprofessional.

5. HaveJuniorstatus(completed60credithours)bytheendoftheSpringsemester.

6. SubmittheSocialWorkReferenceForm.Theindividualcompletingthereference cannotbetheinstructorforSOWK2000orafamilymember.Selectanindividualwho canaddressthefollowingareasaboutyour:

a. Integrityandresponsibility, b. Willingnesstolearn,

c. Opennesstonewexperiencesandideas,

d. AcademicorWork/Volunteerexperience,

e. Interpersonalskillswithintheclassroomorwork/volunteerexperience,and f.Abilitytomanagestress

7. Studentsmustsignstatementsdeclaringthattheyhave:

a. ReadandunderstoodthecurrentBSWHandbook,

b. ReadtheUWStudentCodeofConductandagreetoadheretothecode,

c. ReadtheNASWCodeof Ethicsandagreetoadheretothem,and

d. Readandunderstandacademicandnon-academicReasonsforDismissalfrom theBSWprogram

8. Studentsmustcompleteabackgroundscreening,inaccordancewiththeCollegeof HealthSciencespolicy(seeHealthScienceswebsite).Criminalconvictionsmayresultin rejectionofthecandidateforadmissiontoAdmittedMajor.PleaseseeCriminal BackgroundScreeningintheBSWHandbook.Ifyouwanttonotifyusofacriminal offensethatyouhavebeenconvictedof,submittheincidentinwritingtotheBSW Program Director.Ifneeded,theBSWProgram Directormayaskforcourtdocumentsthatclarify successfulcompletionofcourtrequirements.

Health Sciences Background Check Policy

“Students seeking admission into the College of Health Sciences are required to obtain and pay for a criminal background check. These background checks are routinely required by schools, hospitals, and other agencies that participate in the clinical/ practice education of our students. The results of your criminal background check may determine if you will be admitted to our program. You must inform the Dean of the College if you are convicted of a crime while enrolled in your training program. Depending on the requirements of your program, you may also be required to update your criminal background check each year (experimental application/placement). Each training site will be informed that you have completed a background check prior to your placement at that site.”
