Student Block Placement Portfolio

BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy

Cardiff School of Health Sciences

Directions for Portfolio use

This portfolio represents the assessment process for Speech and Language Therapy students from Cardiff Met who are undertaking their Year 3 Block Placement.

The Placement Educators (PE’s) with responsibility for completing the white forms are the lead Placement Educators within each of the client group areas that the student is attending i.e. Paediatric, Adult (acquired) and/or Adult Learning Disability. The PE will be required to complete one form prior to the Cardiff Met Tutor visit and a second form prior to completion of the block placement. There will be a maximum of three pre-visit and three post-visit (white) forms per student.

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the relevant sections (the initial white pages) are completed by their PE’s and that their reflections (the first yellow page) are completed prior to the Cardiff Met Tutor visit.

The Portfolio then has to be made available to the Cardiff Met Tutor during the visit for them to view the PE reports and complete the visit report form (the blue sheet).

The student must then ensure that they complete the yellow reflection sheet following the visit, setting relevant targets from the visit for the rest of their block placement.

Prior to the completion of the block placement the student must then ensure that the PEs have completed the final report forms (the subsequent white sheets) and that they complete the final reflection form (the last yellow sheet).

The entire portfolio must then be returned to Cardiff Metimmediately upon completion of the block in order that the Cardiff Met Tutor who undertook the Placement Visit can award a final mark, based on the reports in the portfolio, or contact the Lead PE’s to agree a mark. A percentage mark will need to be negotiated where there is a discrepancy between the PE reports and/or the visit report.

Students should be aware that a delay/failure to return the completed portfolio will result in the Cardiff Met Tutor being unable to agree a mark and may prevent their progression into Year 4 of the course.

Marking Criteria

Independence rating:

A student would rate as ‘student led’ on the scale of independence if their preparation and ‘hands on’ work is undertaken with minimal support/ prompting from the Placement Educator (PE).

A student who requires a significant amount of support/prompting from the PE for their preparation and work within sessions would therefore rate as ‘PE led’ on the independence scale.

Performance rating:

The scale of the performance rating is NOW REPRESENTED BY A % MARK AND NOT A LETTER GRADE. For those who still ‘think’ in letter grades this equates to:

Excellent = A (70-100%), Good = B (60-69%), Satisfactory = C (50-59%), Weak = D (40-49%) and Fail = F (0-39%).

Please find the marking criteria below to help you when deciding upon a suitable mark for the student. The criteria relate to the midpoint mark in the band.

Please remember that performance should be graded in relation to the student’s level of training (end of year 3) and not in relation to that of a NQP.

Performance Rating / Mark / Comment / Descriptions
Excellent / 70% - 100% / A quite exceptional and outstanding student, with no weaknesses identified.
- Sound theoretical knowledge given the stage of training
- Effective applications of accurate and appropriate theory to practice in all clinical situations
- High level of self monitoring and clinical awareness, with consistent ability to respond ‘on the spot’
Good / 60% - 69% / An above average student, consistently achieving a high level of performance
-Sound theoretical knowledge given the stage of training
- Application of accurate and appropriate theory to practice in most clinical situations
- Good level of self monitoring and clinical awareness, with ability to respond 'on the spot' most of the time
Satisfactory / 50% - 59% / An average student, requiring some encouragement and guidance
- Satisfactory theoretical knowledge given level of training
- Ability to relate theory to practice appropriately
- Some evidence of self monitoring, able to respond with prompting and retrospectively
Weak / 40% - 49% / A below average student, requiring a significant level of support
- Limited and/or inaccurate theoretical knowledge given level of training
- Inconsistent or inappropriate application to theory to practice
- Poor self monitoring and inability to suggest appropriate alternative responses
Fail / 0% - 39% / A student consistently failing to achieve appropriate levels of performance despite support
- Very limited or no theoretical knowledge despite level of training
- Limited or no ability to apply theory to practice
- Very poor self monitoring and awareness
