University of Nottingham Careers and Employability Service

Enhanced Summer Placements Scheme – Civil Engineering

The Careers and Employability Service and the Department of Civil Engineering facilitate applications forsponsorship from industrial firms. General details of the scheme andinformation on participating firms should accompany this form. All students in their 1st , 2ndor 3rd(MEng) year who are looking for sponsorship are encouraged to apply – however, the University cannot guarantee that individual applicants will be successful.

Applications for sponsorship are likely to be judged on the following criteria:

  • The potential of the applicant
  • The ability which has been demonstrated
  • Commitment and enthusiasm to the career and employer

Ultimately, applicants are asking firms to invest in them, and need to demonstrate that they are worthy of such investment. Note that you will be expected to undertake a minimum of 6 weeks vacation experience with the firm most years; and that the sponsorship will be preceded by a ‘probationary’ experience period (see details of scheme).

Do not be unduly intimidated by the questions on the form – they are an opportunity for you to show your potential – you will not necessarily be expected to have gained experience and ability in all areas at this stage of your career.

You may also be required to submit a company-specific application form for certain firms at a later point.

Application forms (without CVs) should be submittedelectronically and you should use a different font (eg. Times) so that your responses stand out from the questions. You may format your responses (eg. font size) within reason, but not so that questions/ responses are moved to different pages, or so that the main section of the form occupies more than 4 pages. A scanned signature is acceptable.

Completed forms should be returned to
