The University 1 Experience at St. Paul’s, the Catholic College at the U of M

Welcome to University 1! Students entering the University of Manitoba in September will begin their university careers as members of the University 1 program†. Within this first year, you will have the opportunity to prepare for your future target degree program, to sample interesting courses from a wide range of faculties, and to adjust to the experience of university study before committing yourself to a specific degree program.

In most cases as a student in University 1, you will take:

•at least 6 credit hours from the Faculty of Arts

•at least 6 credit hours from the Faculty of Science

•a further 6 credit hours from either the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Science

•and University 1 courses from other faculties or schools (including Arts and Science) to bring your total number of credits to 30 (i.e. the equivalent of five full courses, 10 half courses or a combination of both)

•Included within the 30 credits mentioned above, you also need to take courses that will meet the University’s written English and Mathematics requirements. At least 3 credit hours are required in each of these areas and these must be completed by the end of your second year of university. Some target faculties may require you to do these during the University 1 year.

What is your target faculty?

The University 1 Experience is only the first 24–30 credit hours of work after which you must be ready to enter a specific degree program in one of our faculties or schools. To be ready for this transition, you will find that each program has lists of courses that are either required in University 1, or that are recommended for University 1. Refer to the chapter pertaining to each faculty or school in the Undergraduate Calendar and Registration Guide for specific course requirements.

Moving On: What Happens After U1

Many students take between one or three years to complete their entrance requirements to their target faculty or school. The number of credit hours you complete within that time period will determine what you do next year. Please see your U1 advisor for help on deciding what is the best time frame for you.

What is your alternate target faculty?

Many first year students are still trying to decide between two or three different career paths and will therefore need to juggle courses in the University 1 program to prepare them for several possibilities. Check Startbook and the University Undergraduate Calendar for the University 1 courses that are required and/or recommended for each alternate program you may have in mind. It may not be possible to choose classes to meet all your career interests; you may need to prioritize your goals. The University 1 Student Help Centre (474-6209) will be able to assist you in working out dual or triple goal plans.

Do you want to expand your horizons and take courses from a wide variety of faculties and schools?

If you have taken all of your required and recommended courses and still have space left in your timetable, see page 58 of the Undergraduate Calendar for some interesting possibilities. Once you have entered your target faculty, you may not have the opportunity for many free choice electives, so this is your chance to be creative!

Students are responsible for ensuring that requirements for target faculties are met!

All faculties have advisors available to assist students in planning their programs. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to meet with an advisor, please contact the University 1 Student Help Centre or the individual faculties directly (telephone numbers are listed below) or read the admissions requirements in the Undergraduate Calendar (page numbers listed below).

† Some students will enter directly into Engineering, Music and Fine Art.
