Full-Time (10 Month) Professional Position

Head Coach (Soccer and Lacrosse)

This position is responsible for all aspects of UMF’s NCAA Division III Men’s/Women’s Soccer and Men’s/Women’s Lacrosse programs and will be expected to abide by and uphold the regulations of the NCAA Division III and the North Atlantic Conference. Specific duties will include the recruitment of quality student-athletes, conducting and supervising practices and competitions, scheduling, team travel, budget management, equipment inventory, supervision of assistant coaches and student-workers, and monitoring of student-athletes’ academic progress. Other duties as Head Coach are as follows:

  • Head coaches agree to foster the physical/health and emotional welfare of each student-athlete in their program.
  • Head coaches commit to supporting the student-athletes academic growth and success through graduation.
  • Head coaches agree to foster an environment that promotes diversity and respect consistent with University non-discrimination policies regarding race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin or citizenship status, age, disability, or veteran’s status or education.
  • Head coaches are expected to model integrity, respect, and good sportsmanship at all times and to hold student-athletes accountable for the same
  • As members of the NCAA Division III and the North Atlantic Conference head coaches are responsible for knowing and abiding by the rules and regulations of these governing bodies. Each head coach is required to complete the annual “open book” NCAA certification examination annually and submit it to the Director of Athletics prior to the commencement of their pre-season or September 1st (which ever comes first). Furthermore, head coaches are responsible for any assistant coach’s adherence to these same policies and regulations.
  • Head Coaches must be familiar with and abide by University policies regarding Sexual Harassment and Alcohol and Drugs. Coaches shall not socialize with or date student-athletes nor consume alcohol/illegal/banned substance with them at any time. Furthermore, coaches may not consume alcohol or any substance that could impair function/judgment when responsible for any student-athletes (i.e. an overnight trip). Head coaches are responsible for communicating these same policies and regulations to assistant coaches and holdthem accountable for the same.
  • Head Coaches typically need to drive college vans for team travel to competitions, in some cases practice and on occasion other events. All drivers of University vehicles must possess a current driver’s license and a driving record that meets the campus driving eligibility standards, plus pass an on-line training program with 80% or better scoring.
  • Coaches/designated drivers are expected to adhere strictly to all laws and campus vehicle operation policies. There is no tolerance for speeding or any reckless behavior while transporting student-athletes. Reports of such will result in disciplinary action up to immediate suspension of driving and/or coaching responsibilities. The head coach is also responsible for the safe operation of any other vehicles transporting the team/team members. Multiple vans should travel within sight of each other whenever possible. The coach is responsible for each vehicle having directions and means of communication in transit.
  • Head coaches’ primary responsibilities are directed at coaching (organizing progressive teaching, setting goals and motivating athletes; developing sport skills and stamina, teamwork, discipline and confidence, in both practices and competition for the duration of the season and any post-season competition their team/members may qualify for).
  • Head coaches are responsible for equipment/uniform inventory, issuance, proper care/sanitation, collection, and storage in designated on campus facilities.
  • Head coaches are responsible for recruiting quality student-athletes throughout the academic year. Every coach must have a written recruiting plan that meets identified/agreed upon needs of their program that is consistent with department and university mission and goals. The bulk of recruiting activities should occur during the fall season so that an identified pool of potential applicants can be followed up on throughout the remainder of the year. Coaches agree to ensure consistent and timely replies to all prospective/parent/HS coach inquiries and follow-up on prospective information identified by admissions counselors. Utilization of the support staff, assistant coaches and/or student managers is essential and encouraged in this regard. Student-athletes may also assist in calling prospective students if desired with appropriate training and supervision. UMF is proud of our success in retention and graduation rates for its student-athletes. Consistent and intentional efforts to recruit student-athletes who can succeed/excel athletically as well as academically and then monitoring and fostering their development and success in both are integral components of the head coach’srole.
  • Head coaches are responsible for detailed and timely roster management.Head coaches must keep eligibility/participation rosters up-to-date and report/confirm any changes in writing in advance of a student-athlete’s participation. New/late additions to any team must be cleared by the trainer and compliance personnel prior to practicing.
  • Head coaches are responsible for working closely with the sports information director to coordinate and communication statistics, records, photos and other promotion/archival information. Appropriate storage of archival material is important. Head coaches are expected to reply to members of the media in an timely and professional fashion that represents the university/department interest, mission and values. Such communication should be coordinated with the SID. All promotions/press-releases must be coordinated through the SID and approved in advance by the AD.
  • Head coaches are expected to engage in maintaining positive connections with alumni in their respective sport and to facilitate efforts to know where they are now (employment/successes). This information is to be shared with alumni as well as sports information.
  • Head coaches are responsible for managing and monitoring money as related to the team’s operating budget and fundraising activities. Head coaches are required to proposed competitive schedules, scouting and recruiting, special events and detail their budget request accordingly. Coaches are required to be pro-active in department administration of travel arrangements and official’s assignments. All fundraising activities must be pre-approved by the Director of Athletics and all campus policies regarding the treatment of this revenue must be adhered to.

Purchasing policies require pre-approval from the Director of Athletics and must be consistent with practices that seek competitive price and merchandise from vendors and manufacturers with fair trade and labor practices.

  • Head coaches must refer all student-athlete injuries to the Head Athletic Trainer as soon as possible. Head coaches should defer care and treatment of injuries when a certified trainer is available and require Assistant coaches to do likewise.
  • Head coaches agree to hold current certification in American Red Cross/ Adult First Aid and CPR/AED and to comply with department emergency action plans, equipment/facility prevention of infectious diseases and blood borne pathogen procedures.
  • Head coaches must provide the athletic administration and support staff adequate means to communicate throughout the year and respond to notification in a timely fashion. Head coaches should maintain e-mail accounts that they agree to check daily during their contract period and routinely during the summer period. If e-mail access is impossible other arrangements must be made for timely communication with the department and/or prospective student-athletes.
  • Head coaches typically need to drive college vans for team travel to competitions, practice and/or other events. All drivers of University vehicles must pass an on-line training program with 80% or better scoring to be eligible drivers.   • Other head coaching responsibilities typically include: *roster management, handling money/administration of the team’s budget, statistical recording, scouting, scheduling/input on scheduling needs, travel arrangements, strength and conditioning programs, and **fundraising activities. *Head coaches must keep eligibility/participation rosters up-to-date and report/confirm any changes in writing in advance of a student-athlete’s participation. New/late additions to any team must be cleared by the athletic trainer and compliance personnel prior to practicing.

  • Head coaches are ultimately responsible for supporting sports information needs/requirements for their sport such as statistical/results recording and reporting to the appropriate venues and organizations. Supporting the archival of sport information and artifacts are part of this responsibility.
  • Head coaches must refer all student-athlete injuries to the Head Athletic Trainer as soon as possible. Head coaches should defer care and treatment of injuries when a certified trainer is available and require assistant coaches to do likewise.
  • Head coaches agree to hold current certification in American Red Cross/American Heart Adult First Aid, CPR and AED and to comply with OSHA blood borne pathogens procedures in the event of an injury.
  • Head coaches must provide the athletic administration and support staff adequate means to communicate throughout the year and respond to notification in a timely fashion. Head coaches must maintain university e-mail accounts that they agree to check daily in-season and weekly out of season. If e-mail access is impossible other arrangements must be made for timely communication with the department and/or prospective student-athletes.
  • Head coaches are expected to foster positive relationships with alumni by developing and maintaining information about former student-athletes in their respective sports. Alumni competitions/gatherings are generally encouraged. Broadcast communications/plans outside the standard department website (sport newsletter, e-blast, etc) must be pre-approved by the director.
