The Department of Child and Adolescent Health, University of Cape Town, is currently looking for 2 research staff members, namely a Research Study Coordinator for a TB diagnostic study and a Research Study Nurse for an Effectiveness of Rotavirus vaccine study at Red Cross Children’s Hospital and the Khayelitsha District (Nolungile HCC).

Applications are awaited from suitably qualified candidates with an interest in health and research for immediate appointment to these 12-month contract posts. As a Research Coordinator/Nurse you will be involved in various research activities related to the diagnosis of Tuberculosis and the effectiveness of the Rotavirus vaccine and the follow-up of patients. The appointees will work within a study team and assist in the study goals through the recruitment and care of the clinical trial participants, collection of specimens and data, and follow-up of participants. Flexibility would be advantageous, as it would be required of the research staff to be moved between projects.

Essential requirements:

·  a Senior Certificate (Grade 12)

·  qualification as a Professional Nurse

·  registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Diploma/Degree in General Nursing, Midwifery or Community Health Nursing

·  fluency in Afrikaans and or Xhosa an advantage

·  ability to work independently and as part of a team with good interpersonal and communicative skills.

·  a valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport

·  computer literacy.

The following would be advantageous:

·  previous research experience

·  knowledge of TB, and HIV

·  knowledge of the current immunisation schedule

·  integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses

·  experience with paediatric nursing and phlebotomy

The annual cost of employment, is dependent on qualifications, experience and the extent to which essential criteria are met.
