University Liaison Maths Society Grants Scheme Application Guidance

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is keen to increase engagement of university students with the activities of the IMA. As part of this initiative a programme of small grants is available to give university student Mathematical Societies some funding for activitiesto enhance their programme. More information on the IMA and its activities can be found at

Grants of up to £360can be used to support:

  • mathematical activities (putting on talks of mathematical interest, printing a maths newsletter or travelling as a group to IMA conferences or places of mathematical interest);
  • promotional activities (printing t-shirtsetc. including the IMA logo with your Math Soc one); or,
  • networking activities, quizzes, Maths Arcade etc.

All other good ideas are willingly considered

Some general notes:

IMA University Liaison Officer presentations – My travel expenses and time are covered by the IMA and don’t impact on your grant funds.

Speaker travel expenses are acceptable but not fees –mathematical speakers are expected to give their time to you free.

Modest food costs to encourage attendance and venue costs (eg. if you have to cover late opening costs for lecture hall use after hours or internal university room charges)can be met.

Logo Clothing costs – don’t designate more than half of the grant to this and if forsports kits, then think about the gender balanceof the distribution of resources: is it a mixed team?

Conditions

To qualify for the full grant we require that engage with an academic staff member who is a member of the IMA. If this is not done, the grant is limited to £200. We have designated IMA members acting as our representatives at most universities so ask if you are unable to identify an IMA member of your department.

We would like you to encourage your members to join the IMA as Student Members – using the myIMA tab of the IMA website and then following the Join us process. Or to sign up for our e-Student programme (e-Students get a newsletter 6 times a year and discount on attending IMA Early Career Mathematician conferences), a sign-up list is on the bottom of this form which you can scan and e-mail back to me at Erica.tyson@ima,org.uk with your application or after your freshers’ event and any subsequent meetings (names, e-mail addresses and permission to keep their data electronically)

You display the IMA logo on any web pages and communications of your society.

You let us publish your society and your grant report on the IMA student webpage and you supply us a link to any webpage your society has.

We also ask for the opportunity for the University Liaison Officer to present to your members about Careers in Mathematics and the IMA.

How to Apply and how it works

Fill out form and sign up list below (ideally with 20 e-Students) and e-mail to .

If approved, we e-mail you a purchase order. Your treasurer must use the purchase order to get your university to invoice us, your Student Union finance officer will be the person your treasurer needs to contact to do that. We pay over the money to your account by electronic (BACS) transfer. Please note that this must be a university or Student Union MathsSoc account.

We ask for a report at the end of the academic year in which the grant was awarded. This will be published on our website and may be included in Mathematics Today the IMA magazine we or the e-Student newsletter. We are really happy to feature them with a picture if you wish.

(If sending a pdf file please delete this page it is not necessary for the application to be considered).
