EVENT DESCRIPTIONS:

ART: Mrs. Vowels - Students study 40 famous portraits and commit the artist and title to memory. Students learn to recognize various works of art and the artists who created them.

CHESS: Mrs. Wright - Chess puzzle solving introduces students to the study of chess teaching them problem solving, hones concentrations and encourage analytical and strategic thinking.

DICTIONARY SKILLS: Mrs. Johnsen - Thorough knowledge of the dictionary is a way to increase a student’s ability to find the information that is needed for class work as well as everyday living. The subject matter of all tests is taken from Merriam-Webster’s Intermediate Dictionary.

IMPROMPTU SPEAKING:Mrs. Boone: Impromptu speaking provides opportunities for students to explore the use of the voice and body in speaking situations, to examine the different purposes for speaking, to organize ideas and develop self-confidence.

LISTENING: Mrs. Moeller - This contest provides a challenging format to test the improvement of their listening abilities, and encourages students to develop the foundation skills they will need throughout their lives, both in and out of the classroom.

MUSIC MEMORY: Mrs. Guerra – An in-depth study of fine piece of music literature taken from a wide spectrum of musical genres to expose students to great composers, their lives, and their music.

NUMBER SENSE: Mrs. Childs - Being able to perform quick mathematical calculations is the premise behind this contest. The test covers functions appropriate for the grade level. Students are given 10 minutes to complete the test. All calculations are mental. Erasures are not allowed. Are you up to the challenge?

ORAL READING: Mrs. Dreibrodt- Students prepare a piece of poetry or several poems from a particular book to read out loud to a panel of judges. The student will gain confidence and develop good speaking skills through this oral reading activity.

READY WRITING: Mrs. Eichel - This is a writing contest that teaches students to write a clear and correct paper that is interesting and original. Students select one of two topics and then have up to 1 ½ hours (90 minutes) to write an essay. This selection will take place the end of November.

SPELLING: Mrs. Cain - The UIL spelling contest is designed to give students exposure to a wide variety of vocabulary words. Depending on their grade level, students must spell between 75 and 160 words in 30 – 60 minutes.

*While all 3rd, 4th, 5th graders are encouraged to participate, only 3 students per grade level may represent McCoy at the district competition. (Students will be released from local campus at 2pm to travel via district buses to EVHS.) More details will be available as we near the competition.
