Position Description

Position Title: / Youth Development Worker
Classification: / Youth Worker level 3
Award: / Individual employment agreement, with conditions based on the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010.
Hours Per week: / 15
Responsible to: / General Manager & Practice Leader
Any special conditions: / Based inLatrobe Valley
Key Summary of Functions:
Through assertive outreach, program and event management provide the following functions:
  • Strengthen the skills, confidence and opportunities for young people to engage and better participate in a range of community, cultural, social and learning opportunities
  • Improve connections for young people with peers, family, education and community
  • Assist young people to advocate for their needs and achievements within local community environments
  • Improve community recognition and celebration of young people's achievements, and
  • Strengthen collaborative links between support services, education, employment, and community based programs.

Key Duties:

  • Facilitate the Engage! Latrobe Valley Youth Program
  • To resource and support communities in their work with young people in the target group.
  • To network and liaise with other agencies and workers to better utilise resources for young people.
  • Provide high quality, flexible support to young people within the target group.
  • Ensure all administrative and reporting requirements of the program are completed and submitted to the relevant organisations within the appropriate timeframe
  • Use principles of best practice to provide an innovative and responsive program.
  • Maintain current and accurate case notes, records and statistical information.
  • Staff are responsible for upholding consumer rights, privacy, confidentiality and informed consent.
  • All UCG staff are responsible for identifying, monitoring, resolving and reviewing OH&S and risk management issues.
  • Undertake review and evaluation of program and professional practice.
  • Comply with organisational effectiveness strategies of UnitingCare Gippsland, including development of quality plans, personal objectives and training plans.
  • Assist in the general administration of UnitingCare Gippsland such as working the switchboard at peak times.
  • Respect the diverse needs of all community groups and individuals to ensure that their needs are met in an inclusive and sensitive manner.
  • Participate in agency quality accreditation processes.
  • Other duties as directed.

Key Selection Criteria

Mandatory:

  1. Clear police check
  2. Current Victorian Working with Children Check.
  3. Current Victorian Drivers License.
  4. Post secondary qualifications in Welfare, Youth, Community Development or related field (minimum requirement – Diploma Level) Certificate level qualifications will be considered if applicant is willing to further their study.
  5. Demonstrated ability to use computers efficiently including Word and Outlook.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of quality frameworks and continuous quality improvement processes.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work within the vision, mission, policies and principles of the organisation.

Position:

  1. Demonstrated experience in working with young people, including the vulnerable and difficult to engage.
  2. Sound understanding of the issues impacting on young people.
  3. Knowledge of program and events management including group work.
  4. Demonstrated experience in or knowledge of, assertive outreach and advocacy for vulnerable young people.
  5. Ability to work independently within a team context.
  6. Demonstrated ability to participate in a multi-skilling learning environment.
  7. Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions to issues that arise

within the community or workplace using community development

principles.

  1. Demonstrated ability to relate positively to a large range of people from

diverse backgrounds.
