United Way of Northwest Arkansas offers Free Tax Service Initiatives

Lowell, Ark. (February 13, 2017) –Lowell, ARK. – With tax season underway, United Way of Northwest Arkansas provides a direct program to support hardworking families in NWA keep their money by providing FREE tax preparation and filing services. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is an in-person resource for individuals earning $54,000 or less. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation funds this Free Tax Service Initiative and CARE Community Center provides the tax preparation and filing services.

The second free tax service is myfreetaxes.com. For individuals making $66,000 or less, myfreetaxes.com provides a free online tax filing service.This secure websitecan be used to file federal and state taxes in all 50 statesand is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for people to file their taxes. Just like the in-person sites, this website will look for all the tax credits that someone might be eligible for to ensure families and individuals are maximizing their refunds. The average tax preparation costs over 200 dollars compared to the free services of VITA and myfreetaxes.com. Last year over six million dollars was put back into the Northwest Arkansas Community through the free tax services United Way of Northwest Arkansas provides

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Sites

Free tax preparation centers run by CARE Community Center, also known as Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) sites, are open throughout Northwest Arkansas through April 14, 2018. These tax centers are run by IRS Certified Volunteers who are trained to help find all the tax credits that someone might be eligible for to ensure families and individuals are maximizing their refunds.

These sites are ideal for people who might not know how, or feel comfortable, using the internet to file their taxes. Bilingual services are available at VITA sites.
