POSITION DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Behavior Specialist

DIVISION: Support Services

SUPERVISOR: Associate Executive Director

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

JOB SUMMARY: Provide behavioral support and develop plans for consumers in residential settings.

EDUCATION OR TRAINING REQUIREMENT: M.A. in Behavioral Science or related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: 2-3 years experience in designing, training, and implementation of behavior program for individuals with MR/DD.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Behavior Tech

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

I.Assessment

  1. Assesses clients who exhibit maladaptive behaviors when referred by the program manager staff or others –
  2. Review files
  3. Meet with staff
  4. Complete staff assessments
  1. Performs a functional analysis on clients exhibiting

maladaptive behaviors which includes, review of file,

observation, then written in plan and functional

analysis.

  1. Communicates with Area Director and interdisciplinary

team in order to formulate behavior management program

best suited to pertinent resident.

  1. Writes behavior programs for all clients who need them.
  1. Trains staff and monitors implementation of Behavior Management programs.
  1. Assists in implementation of behavior management program

when necessary.

  1. Assesses the effectiveness of the behavior management program and makes changes, if needed.
  2. Provides individual and/or group counseling to residents and their families to improve social, communication, or coping skill, as needed.

II.Documentation

  1. Write activity notes/progress notes (every 3 months) on

all client interactions.

  1. Maintains a weekly itinerary.

III.Training

  1. Trains all staff who work with clients on their behavior management programs.
  2. Maintains records on staff training.
  3. Teaches Crisis Prevention & Intervention (CPI) to staff in need of training.
  4. Conduct site audits.
  5. Conduct Behavior Support and Sexuality training during

monthly staff orientation.

IV.Crisis Intervention

  1. Responds to all calls from staff requesting assistance with a behavior.
  2. Assists in de-escalating behaviors.

V.Contact Visits

  1. Makes at least 1 monthly contact visit with all

consumers on the caseload. Makes more frequent visits

to disruptive clients.

VI.Meetings

  1. Attends monthly residential/day hab meeting.
  2. Attends ISP meetings for residents who exhibit

maladaptive behaviors.

  1. Attends inservices and training as necessary.

VII.Appointments

  1. Attend psychiatrist appointments for clients, with Program Manager as requested.
  2. Keep list of all psychotropics being taken by

consumer.

  1. Visit clients while hospitalized due to behavioral

incidents, and keep family informed.

  1. Accompany clients on medical appointments when

appointment is behavior related, as requested.

VIII. Develop and maintain positive and productive relationship

with consumers, families, co-workers, and community members.

IX. Maintain objectivity in position in order to set appropriate

limits while working with consumers.

X. Support consumers in their personal growth and development,

respecting cultural, ethnic, spiritual and individual

differences.

XI. Adhere to all agency policies and procedures.

XII. Other duties as assigned.
