Quarterly Assessments /
- Why?
- To give the teachers a guideline of student learning county-wide.
- Allow teachers to re-teach concepts students find difficult.
- Additional way to monitor student success/progress in class.
- When?
- Shortly after each nine week period ends – and is graded as a quiz
?OTD /
- What?
- Geography Questions of the Day (?OTD)
- Warm-up Opening activity
- 2 questions each day to be answered using any resource except each other.
- Correct answers are gone over daily, and students make corrections accordingly.
- Why?
- A great way to introduce students to geography and the world. Often an answer to a question is a place we will later study, like Germany.
- Graded?
- ?otd worksheets are a study guide and not graded.
- Students will have a review day in class and a study night. Then a 10 question quiz will be given. Questions are taken directly from the ?otd worksheets.
Grading policy / Bedford County Schools Grading Policy: New for 2013-2014 School Year
30% Formative =Student scores on teacher-led activities, participation, homework, group activities
70% Summative =Student scores on quizzes, tests, projects
Grades will be assigned as either a formative (What are we doing to make sure you are learning the material?) or a summative (What are we doing to show that you know all of the material?). Your final grade will be comprised of 30% formative grades and 70% summative grades.
Homework /
- Students should never spend more than 20 minutes on any one homework assignment for me
- If a student spends 20 minutes and still hasn’t reached the end, simply sign the assignment and return it unfinished. When this happens, I will work specifically with students to better understand the concept.
- Ongoing assignment:
- Students should spend about 10 minutes each night studying their notes.
- I tell them that this is equivalent to two commercial breaks. Mute the television and read through your notes top to bottom. (The alternative is to read through your notes on the way tofootball/soccer/cheerleading/dance practice and on the return trip home.)
- This will work wonders for students in memorizing information because of the repetition.
Fun Friday Reminder /
- If all assignments are turned in by Friday, then students will be allowed a thirty minute “fun” period on the field with the rest of the sixth graders here at FMS.
- If, however, they are missing any assignments from any of their core classes, they will not be permitted to go to the field, but will instead report to the workroom where they will be given 30 minutes to complete any of the missing tasks.
Behavior /
- Students will be expected to follow the “Bedford County Code of Conduct” and classroom rules/expectations which we summarize the first days of school.
- Level of consequences: warning, lunch detention, phone call home after 3 lunch detentions, after-school detention, referral to Principal (depending upon behavior, teacher decides level of consequence)
Communication / I look forward to the privilege to teach your child this year.I value my relationships with students and parents and welcome communication at any time. The fastest way to reach me is through email. Also, check my teacher webpage for announcements and anticipated activities. I am excited about History, and one of my goals is to lead students in understanding the causes and effects of history, how it relates to the present, and its possible future impacts.
