Agriculture Mechanics I

Unit: (Plasma Arc Cutting PAC)

Rationale:

Plasma cutters are widely used because of their precision on cuts. Plasma cutting is a clean cutting machine that can cut many thicknesses of meta at a quick rate. There are many types and sizes of Plasma cutters that will cut to different capacities and styles. Plasma cutting is also very popular in cutting out ornamental designs and structures. With new technology cutting has been brought to a new realm. No longer is cutting just trimming or cutting down larges stock. Plasma cutters can be hooked up to new machines called pangrams or shadow cutters. These new computerized eyes will cut out patterns of fine detail quickly and efficiently. The skills learned during this unit will enable students to complete personal projects after completion of work, as well and more importantly acquire the skills and practice needed in today’s workforce.

Students during this unit are learning the basics of TIGwelding on many different types of metal as well as metalworking, but also the many different foundation elements, which are essential for all fields. Safety is one of these important aspects important in all shops will all types of jobs. During this unit students will have the opportunity to safely use many different tools and equipment which is very important in having the skills required in getting a position in this field.

Goal: During this unit, the students will…

  1. Demonstrate proper safety practices while operating Air Arc and Plasma cutting equipment. 2.5.12.1
  2. Successfully pass with (100%) appropriate air arc and Plasma cutting safety test or write wrong answers 10X each. 2.5.12.2
  3. Select appropriate consumables for specific applications. 2.5.12.3
  4. Properly assemble Air arc and Plasma cutting apparatus. 2.5.12.4
  5. Diagnose equipment failure and notify instructor. 2.5.12.5
  6. Perform accepted safe cutting practices. 2.5.12.6
  7. Properly cut ferrous metals. 2.5.12.7
  8. Perform basic maintenance and repairs as related to the consumable parts.
  9. Know/understand/and follow school rules (SAFE, RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL)

Objective: (ESLR Matched) Students will be able to…

  1. Complete at least 3 cuts during each class period that will be critiqued by student first then by instructor Students will work in a progressive order of technique.
  2. Critique their cuts to me the instructor for improvements, comments.
  3. Illustrate proper use and safety on all equipment used in PAC cutting
  4. Get a completed grade on cuts in a systematic order of completion with at least a 70% or higher on each machine or technique
  5. Perform daily cleanup of shop work area, as well as entire shop cleanup
  6. Fill out daily timecards illustrating completed daily tasks as well as cleanup.

Agriculture Content Standards Covered

Content Standard 2.0: Welding: students will understand the principles and application of welding and cutting and be able to explain the role of heat and the fusion process.

Performance standard 2.5

Students shall practice safety, demonstrate equipment setup and maintenance, appropriate welding procedures and practice proper tool selection while using Air Arc and Plasma Cutting (PAC) procedures

NevadaAcademic Standards Correlation:

Math: 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 22.0

Science: 22.0

SDAIE Strategies:

  1. As tasks or projects are being completed, I will walk around shop asking individual students if they need help, and while doing so asking each student different questions about their project/weld to help them learn and understand their project specifically and give them confidence on what they know (prior knowledge/bridging)
  2. Before anyone gets on a new tool/equipment I will as the instructor give a visual/oral example of proper technique and illustrate quality work. (Modeling)
  3. When questions arise I will try different methods of answering them, I may physically help the student (example/illustration) on that specific task. (Visualization)
