Initiating and Culminating Events / Events in Brief: The work sample was introduced with an group activity of shaking heavy cream by hand until it became butter. Following, we did the same task with a mixer and discussed the comparison.
As a culminating activity, the students presented inventions using simple machines.

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Resource Student / A great deal of kinesthetic activity was employed in the lessons and worked well at engaging the students from the LD program.
Gifted Student / Those students who worked above lesson level had the opportunity to explore simple machines through deeper discovery at the learning center. Materials were provided for making a simple machines collage as well as researching simple machines at a more involved level.

Assessment PlanNarrative / Pre-Assessment: Abbreviated written test with multiple-choice questions akin to those presented on SOL’s.
Post-Assessment: More developed test including same 10 multiple choice questions used in pre-assessment, so as to compare question-by-question on success of unit.

Assessment Tools / Throughout the unit, I assessed using checklists, as many tasks were considered successful upon completion.

Report of Assessment Results / Report in Brief: Overall, students improved from the pre to the post assessment.
